Taxi and the Taverna Scam

by Callavetta

There were the occasions when we wanted to go somewhere that required a cab and each time we asked the cab driver to take us to a designated restaurant he counseled us "no, no, you don't want to go there.... I take you to a restaurant by the water! A restaurant where even my mother likes to eat. A restaurant where you eat real GREEK food!" Finally, when we were too tired and too beaten down to protest anymore, and the dirt and grime of Athens covered us we said, what the heck, we'd like to be by the water... take us there!"We should have been suspicious when someone from the restaurant staff ran to the taxi and opened the door, beckoning us down the stairs from the street into a pleasant taverna situated near the water in a marina. And further suspicion may have been aroused when the waiter whisked away our menus before we had a chance to look at them, presenting instead a platter of...

Loss of Identity

by Callavetta

In Athens it seems that everyone is trying to separate you from something; your money, your virtue, your belongings. One day at the Internet Cafe, while the we were keeping in touch with loved ones at home, someone successfully separated the us from two out of three of those. A backpack was nabbed containing both wallets (containing cash, credit cards, and all of the stuff that wallets usually contain), one passport, a camera, pictures thus far taken (we're NOT climbing up to that Accropolis AGAIN!) and our souvenier 5000 romanian dollars). Lessons to be learned; ALWAYS keep a copy of your passport in a separate place and another at home for loved ones to fax at time of need. ALWAYS keep your credit card info listed somewhere separate from your credit cards. ALWAYS keep your PIN numbers separate from your ATM or credit cards. ALWAYS keep one card separate from the others in case you need...

Cameras

by SzaraManisha

Be careful in the big cities. This sometimes can be easily recognized that you are tourist, andyou may be offered a digital video camera for a good price on the street. Dont buy that: those are usually fake ones, and you will only loose your money. What interesting: all of them are sony cameras, surprisingly, that is then difficult to believe that they are stolen

Lots to see, you might need help!

by asturnut

I think Greece is one of those places where you would actually be better off with a guide of some kind. There is so much to see and Greece is such a big country, you really need some help getting around. And if you're American, you will stick out like a sore thumb in Greece. Be mindful that theives love to go after Americans...

Terrorist Group

by mcbeck

There's a fairly prominent terrorist group in Greece known as 17 November. Their main beef is with American big businesses - apparently, they have bombed more than one hotel owned and operated by American businesses. They're not known for being hostile towards tourists, but it's still something you should be aware of. This really didn't come into play for us because we wanted to stay at places that were Greek, not American. Same with the restaurants and businesses we went to. But, if you're concerned about these guys, you should definitely check out the warnings and travel information from the US State Department (travel.state.gov).

It's true - taxi drivers want your cash

by mcbeck

Believe everyone when they tell you the taxi drivers will screw you. When we first arrived in Athens, every single taxi driver was our best friend, all of a sudden. We chose one that seemed very friendly (and he was). He charged us, in the end, though, about 40 euro for what I later found out should have only cost about 3 euro. The best way to avoid this if you're headed to a hotel and don't want to get into it with the cab driver is to have the hotel pay for the cab, then you pay the hotel. If you're not going to a hotel, simply confront the cab driver about it. If worse comes to worse and you know you're getting screwed, start to write down the cab's number (it's on the trunk) and mention the tourist police. 99 times out of 100, the driver will do anything you think is fair at that point. Apparently, the tourist police come down pretty hard on cab drivers who screw the tourists.

I address this warning to ...

by maxovna

I address this warning to Russian tourists who'll make up their mind to spend some time in Greece. Don't use the service of local Russian speaking guides - they are mostly (not all, of course) ethnic Greeks from Kazakhstan or somewhere else, and their main purpose is to deceive you. Their work as guides leaves much to be desired, they are not experienced or skillful. They are always late for appointments. Or don't turn up at all. Forget about them - just use a map, a guidebook - and good luck!

Best advices in Greece

by Edu_G

- BEST ONE: Wake up early for going to the touristic places. They open at 8AM.If you go early you will be in the place by your own, being able to take pictures, sit and think how the ruins were (quite romantic, it's you and the place). Around 10:30AM the buses full of tourist arrive and it becomes like Las Vegas. This applies to Akropolis, Archeological Museum, Knossos Palace in Crete and Delphi Ruins (tourist arrive here at 12). There's a lot of difference and it worths to wake up a little early to enjoy the place.- Everywhere you go (restaurant, hostel, museum) check the toilet. If it's OK (not even great) USE IT! Maybe it's going to be the only toilet with paper or where you can sit in the whole day.- Never rely on the buses, trains of ferry for taking your airplane. Often the bus is very late or simply doesn't come. Apply specially for your last day.

be careful of the taxis in crete they drive too fast for the roads. there is a shear drop either side of you on some of the roads in crete so if you are driving be aware of the dangers, there are sometimes no barriers between you and the 1000ft drop. mossies are also a pest in the heat, get spray if you are prone to bites

by MrGQ

Greece is a fairly safe place. The only thing I'd warn you about is the Taxi drivers who seem to have one mission, rip you off! Please read my Tip in the Athens page. Also if you should ride one of the buses during rush hour make sure your waalet is in a very secure place because pick pockets office hours happen to be during the rush hour and thier offices happen to be on the busses and their clients happen to be tourists like you!
