The founder of the Hungarian national Opera and the composer of the Hungarian national anthem was born here in Gyula. The yellow house behind the Nemetvaros church, offers a small glimps into his life. Although the diplay does not have an English translation, it is still interesting to look at the costumes, music and photos of a bygone era. The music piped throughout the museum adds to the ambiance.

Open every day of the week, the castle baths are reputed to be some of the best in the country (It was the second thing my friends in Budapest told me about Gyula, when I told them I would be moving here). There are both indoor, and in summer outdoor thermal baths. The entire list of minerals and their percentages can be found just inside the door. The olive green water may not seem enticing, but after a stressful day it is lovely to sit in the naturally heated water (arround 32 degrees) and unwind. Open from early morning until 6pm, if you go at 3pm there is a reduced rate. Apart from swimming - and there are family pools too, there is also a nice park outside, where the kids can play. If you go in the so called winter entrance, the brick one, the front desk should speak some English.
