If you want to walk after a long bath you have the walking area in the centre of the city. It is small and nice, clean and there are a few shops, not so many. The walking along the river bamks is nicer. You can feed the ducks or just sit on a bench and watch them swimming. It can be very relaxing.

There are not so many things to do in Gyula but the word is RELAXATION. The streets are very nice and clean. You can walk around the town, see the buildings, the centre and the Castle.
The main activity in Gyula is going to the Thermal Baths Complex. There is an old part with hot thermal pools and the new part, with water sledges and caves, saunas and different pools for children, inside the complex. There are also other pools autside but in winter there is only one that communicates with the inside pool. If you enjoy hot water this is a nice place.

The founder of the Hungarian national Opera and the composer of the Hungarian national anthem was born here in Gyula. The yellow house behind the Nemetvaros church, offers a small glimps into his life. Although the diplay does not have an English translation, it is still interesting to look at the costumes, music and photos of a bygone era. The music piped throughout the museum adds to the ambiance.

For 100 years, this Cukraszda has been making fresh and delicious cakes. Apart from friendly staff who speak English, German and Hungarian, the amazing coffee, wide selection of teas, awesome ice cream there is also the cake. MMmmm. The teacher, who picked me up in Budapest, told me that it has the best cakes in Gyula and the best part was that they aren't that expensive. If the cake isn't enough to lure you here, (and it should be) the museum should be. In the back, there is a room devoted to the instruments of baking 100 years ago. It is fun trying to figure out what they were used for. So come, pull up a chair in the beidermier decorated rooms, and eat cake.

Gyula Transportation

A little expensive than the train, it is also more convientent. The bus to Békescsaba runs more frequently, and is located near to the center of town. There is also a bus arround town, but I am not sure where it goes, because I always walk. The bus schedule is worth checking out at www.volan.hu - click on the first option of the side pannel (Belföldi something- I think), scroll down, Type your starting location in the honan blank, and where you would like to go in the hol or hova.

Trains, ahh the trains. Even though you will almost always have to change in Békescsaba, the train can be the best way to get to Gyula. It is fairly reliable, and one can get up, walk around, use the bathroom and open windows. The train station is located at one end of Békes sugarut and the main parts of town on the other, but it is only a walk of 10-15 minutes, and there may be a bus. In the summer it is a nice walk, and as it is straight, it is diffucult to get lost. Check out the schedule at www.elvira.hu (make sure it is .hu)
