Far from being a city, Tokaj is simply a big village. After the dreadfull Miskolc on the way, it has been a real relief, to see that here the nature is really part of the place...
I had already heard about these big nests but this was the first time I really had a chance to see one!!
Favorite thing: Most of the vineyards are in fact situated north of Tokaj. If you have a car, try to get to one of the small villages over there... off the beaten path, this is quite far from the tourists (and then even more difficult to find an english speaker) but the landscapes are wondeful...
There is walk up to the hillside where you can find a cross and a great view.
(See picture at sport tip)
If you are more adventureous than you can plan a trip to the top of the hill, but there is a TV tower there, what is not open to public. Still you can look out to all direction from there.
The landscape is beautiful. You can see Tokaj hill from quite a distance when you approach the reqion as it stands alone in a flat plane.
Also the other hills belongs to this wine region looks nice when you wonder around.
The best thing in Tokaj is obviously the wine. The dry white Furmint and Szamorodni, the semi sweet white Furmint, Szamordi and Muskotaly, the sweet white Furmint, Szamordi and Muskotaly.
And the special ones: the Aszu, the Forditas, the Maslas and also some more modern Cuvee.
For me, the highlight of my visit here was tasting the world famous Tokai wine. One of the greatest wines in the world.
Fondest memory: To be shown about the wine cellars and then have a bottle specially prepared for me.
Favorite thing: You also find the best known Rakoczi Cellar (built back in the 15th Century) in the main square and quite a strange statue in front of it.
Favorite thing: Tokaj city has nice streets, some in the centre only for pedestrians, but even the others are quiet, so ideal for walking.
You may catch the Mayor giving a coach ride to a prominent guest of the town on the main square.
(The man next to the whipper on the first coach is the Mayor of the town.)
There are several confectionery, where you can have icecream, sweet and creamy cakes or cofee, capucchino, etc.
We found a little space in our stomach even after lunch to have an ice cream.
