great wine, great food, sightseeing, activities
The best wines can be expensive.
To drink Hungarian wine is a must.
Many many many little cozy prtivate wine-cellars wait for you there all the year round. In Tokaj is mainly produced white wine, some very sweet and strong. As for wine cellar where I was, unfortunatly dont remmeber its name (but i guess, they are all quite the same inside), on walls was some special grey mold, looked like mushrooms and quite...more
This is one of the most well-known wineries of the area. Since our bookguide highly recommended the visit, we decided to drive from Tokaj to Tolcsva, a charming little village (much smaller and maybe more authentic than Tokaj). The first issue there was to find the 'pince', the address below is refering to the Oremus property while the winerie is...more

The reference in Tokaj is apparently the restaurant on the main square. However some hungarians recommended us the restaurant of the Millenium hotel. True that the food there was as good and the price even cheaper...Even more the restaurant was located in a circular room, not that common to see, crazy architects ;-)more
It seems to be somehow nostalgic for the communist times. The food is not that great there, the staff is quite slow and not very helpful. Overall it's overpriced for the rather low food quality. I've tried fisherman soup and then local fish dish. Both have been acceptable but nothing more. I'd rather not try it again.more
From outside, it may look like a poch restaurant but don't be scared by that... True that the service is very good but the customers are about average...The food is quite good and the price very low (if you compare them to budapest). This is probably one of the best place to eat in Tokaj...more
If you arrive by train (which is a convenient way as there are some direct train from Budapest and plenty of with one change; and very practical as you no need to worry about blood alcohol in your way back) you can get a luxury transfer to/from your accomondation :)
This is a more touristic place, where you will find only bottled wines, but in a great variety. They have their own wines, but also wines from other wineries, so you can choose from a lot of type. You can taste the wines here as well of couse, so you no need to buy blindfolded. A large variety of white wines you can choose from. The specials are...more
You can taste their wines and then choose what you like to buy. They will bottle your choice in front of you. They have five type of white wines, all are their own product. Dry Furmint, Semi sweet Furmint, Muskotaly (sweet), Sweet Furmint and Aszu. All very good so you should try and buy what you like. $3-5/liter for Furmints, Muskotaly...more

Tokay wines come from an area located in the North-East of Hungary named ‘Tokaj Foothills. An area which main city is... Tokaj!!!Even though Tokaj Wineries are producing dry white wines, it is especially with sweetened tastes that Tokaji became famous. In hungarian those white sweet wines are called "aszu" : this can be translated by "liquor-like"....more
Wine drinking could be classified as a National passtime. Of course the saying goes "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" So, it goes without saying, when in Hungary, drink wine. There is never a shortage of a drinking partner as Hungarians need very little excuse to lift a glass to their lips. You may hear the expression "Frocs" this is a mixture of...more
The fame of Tokaj comes from its wonderful wine, the Tokaji Aszú, "the wine of kings and the king of wines" as declared by Louis XIV, king of the French...At the heart of this process is a fungus called Botrytis cinerea or noble rot. The vintage are only made in november so that this fungus has the time to develop; In fact the 'rotten' grapes...more
Beware! Esszencia is a legendary nectar, awfully costly ! For example for a Tokay Esszencia 1993 the lowest price: $47.99,-/100 ml.Essencia is the richest and rarest of all Tokaji wines. It is the truest expression of terroir known to man. Typically, this free run juice takes 6 to 8 years to complete its fermentation to less than 3% alcohol. It can...more
You may feel dizzy after tasting wines, especially if you come out from a cold cellar to the hot street.Majority of Tokaj wine are sweet, very sweet, so it is hard to recognise that they are also strong at the same time.So do not hurry with tasting, eat (e.g. cheese) between wines, drink just a little of each and take a walk before you go to the...more
This is close to the main square but quite easy to miss, there is small street that is climbing to the hill from Rákóczi Pince and directly on your left the entrance to this cellar...
Inside you'll be able to taste lots of different Tokaji they sell by glass (you can alos by the bottle if interested).
You can swim in the river Tisza and Bodrog as they clean enough, but be a good swimmer and look for signs and do not swim where it is not allowed as rivers has strong drift and they are tricky especially around bridges. If you are catious, it is a good sport to swim against the live drift of the river.
You can also take a tour on the rivers by kayak or canoe. If water is not too high and not low either you can get into the maze of dead channels between Tisza and Bodrog.
It is not just sport, but a great chance to see a lot of bird.
You can rent kayak or canoe in Tokaj and get advice where to go.
Equipment: Beside the obvious things protection against moskitos is a must. Also protect yourself against the sun if you are kayaking/canoeing.
Far from being a city, Tokaj is simply a big village. After the dreadfull Miskolc on the way, it has been a real relief, to see that here the nature is really part of the place...I had already heard about these big nests but this was the first time I really had a chance to see one!!more
