When I fly from the United States to Europe American Airlines is always my choice of flying, especially when leisure trips. Since American Airlines does not fly directly to many of the cities in Europe I always have to make a connection either in London or Frankfurt for the onward partner airline flight, in this case Malev Airlines.
When I made my reservations for this trip, I purposely tried to make as many connections as possible to maximize my miles. My trip took me from LaGuardia (LGA) to Dallas (DFW) onward to Frankfurt (FRA) and finally to Budapest (BUD). I could have taken a direct flight into London Heathrow (LHR) and then to Budapest, but there is always a method to my madness.
My AA flight was quite enjoyable and I had the opportunity to meet this really great guy who was incidently flying for miles as well :)
I had a pretty long layover in Frankfurt before connecting to Malev Airlines (which was delayed for about 40 mins.) so I hung out at the British Airlines Lounge for a few hours while I waited.
On my return flight, Malev Airlines again was delayed and I missed my connecting flight. Due to inclement weather in Europe (don't know where though, Frankfurt had some good weather), many of the flights were either cancelled or very delayed.
After waiting at the Maleve ticket counter for alternative flights, Malev booked me on Air France from Frankfurt to Amsterdam (AMS) and onward to JFK. I made it home at about the same time as if I would have taken my original flight.
American Airlines credited me with my miles even though I didn't fly them home, this is why I am loyal to them.

We flew to udapest via Heathrow. We had some time to kill inbetween flights so we headed for the lounge. The lounge had a nice spread for breakfast/lunch. There was a nice benerage area with hot, cold and alcoholic drinks available. There were two station set up with hot and cold food. We had some soup, cheese and crackers and pasta salad. I was surprised at the good quality of the food. It was a nice rest before boarding our next flight.

Malev is not my favorite airline and I doubt I will ever use them again. On our way back to Frankfurt we spent over an hour on the runway with no explanation of the delay. We arrived at Frankfurt just as our connecting flights doors wer closed. We were now delayed in Frankfurt waiting for a flight back to the States. Frankfurt got us onto a flight to Chicago instead of Dalas. We were thankful just to get a flight home until we arrived in a blizzard in Chicago.

This was not my favorite airport. The ticket agent was down right nasty. She made us check our bag even though it was within regulation and was a carryon. Security was long and annoying and the lounge was sub par.

Budapest is well connected with all european capitals, with a couple of intercontinental flights being offered by national hungarian airline Malev. Although Malev's prices are usually affordable compared to other classic carriers, there are cheaper ways to get to Budapest. Budapest's Ferihegy Airport is also well-served by Europe's low-cost carriers. Ryanair is the leader when it comes to low fares, but also Easyjet, Wizz, SkyEurope and Jet2 offer acceptable fares.
Please read also my tip about Budapest Airport, especially the stuff about Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Budapest Airport consists of two terminals, both of which are a couple of kilometers apart. Terminal 1 is the former main terminal which was refurbished in 2005. It is now used by all the low-cost carriers like Ryanair, easyjet, Wizzair and Jet2. The only low-cost airline using Terminal 2 is Air Berlin. There, also all “high-fare” airlines serve destinations in Europe and beyond. There are several ways to get to central Budapest. For some reason, Terminal 1 is more convenient when it comes to terms of public transport. Here, you’ll find a train connecting the airport with Budapest’s Nyugati Railway Station. The cheapest way is to use bus 200 (runs from both terminals) to Köbánya-Kispest Metro Station and take metro line No 3 to the city center. Wizzair has an own shuttle bus and some private companies offer shuttle services, also from Terminal 2. For further information, please check out the airport website.
No matter, if you remembered anything of the stuff I have written above. The only thing which is important enough to remember is: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are KILOMETERS away from each other. You’ll need a bus or a car to travel between them!

The hungarian main airport , the biggest one of the 5 airports in Hungary called Ferihegy (Ferihegyi Nemzetkozi Repuloter in hungarian).
The airport is very close to the city , located only 20 kilometres east-southeast the center of town.

The airport of Budapest (Ferihegy) is located about 22 km east of the city centre. It has 3 terminals (1, 2A, 2B). The distance between the terminals 1 and 2 is about 4 km.
Most flights land at the modern terminals 2A and 2B.
The smaller recently renovated Terminal 1 is mainly served by low-cost airlines.
The cheapest option to get into town is by public transport. Both terminals are served by the new airport bus #200 which goes to the metro terminus Kobanya Kispest (M3). At Terminal 1 you can buy bus tickets from the small RELAY Kiosk.
In addition Terminal 1 can also be reached by the slower bus #93 and by train from Nyugati pu.
Other options are the Airport Minibuses or taxis. A reasonable price for a taxi to the city center is around 4.700 HUF (2008).

Budapest (Ferihegy) International Airport is ten miles south-east of the city centre. It has two terminals: Terminal One is reopened for low-cost airlines in September 2005; Terminal Two is divided into two, with Terminal 2A the departure and arrival point for flights of Malév Hungarian Airlines and Terminal 2B hosting all international carriers’ flights, including some of the budget airlines. The main car hire firms have offices in the arrivals halls. For those not driving, the Airport Minibus will carry passengers to and from any part of Budapest. It is very popular and provides excellent value for money. If you buy the Budapest Card in one of our tourist information offices at the airport, the card can be used already on the public transport from the airport.
