I arrived at 2100 in Budapest and as it was dark chose to take a taxi from the airport. Zona Taxi Company have a stall just outside the terminal building offering fixed fares from the airport to the city for 4200forint (16euro). This taxi was the most expensive thing in my entire trip. If you arrive early morning / afternoon I woud suggest using the bus service to Kelati station, which is much cheaper.

Budapest Airport about 40 minutes drive from the city centre.
The airport has two terminals.
I flew from terminal 1 which is quite a small terminal but there is a decent cafe and restaurant and a few shops selling the usual duty free goods and a few souvenirs. Is a modern looking terminal which was renovated in 2004.
It made a nice change that the passport control staff were very friendly.
The airport website lists which terminal each airline flies from at http://www.bud.hu/english/flights/airlines
Generally the 'cut price' airlines fly from T1.
The Airport Minibus has its desk near the entrance of Terminal 1 - see separate tip.
The arrivals area also has several free city maps and cash machines.
Remember, when using cash machines, rather than getting say 50,000 HUF, get 49,000 then you will have some notes of lower value rather than having a few notes of high value.
Trust me, its difficult to get rid of 10,000 HUF notes!

I flew with Jet2 from Manchester to Budapest.
One of the cheaper airlines, there is no in flight entertainment or meals, however passengers can purchase snacks, sandwiches and drinks on board
The leather seats are comfortable but there isn't much leg room unless you are willing to pay and extra £10.
Jet2 are classed as a 3 Star airline
Flight time is around 2 hours 40 and use Terminal 1 in both Manchester and Budapest airports.
My flight left on time from Manchester, the return leg left about 30 minutes late due to weather conditions.
Staff were friendly and helpful and it was nice to hear lots of information from the flight deck (unusual these days sadly)
I flew on a Boeing 737-300 the only other airline type in the fleet is a 757-200.
Tickets can be purchased easily from Jet2's website and you only need your passport to check in (but best to take a print out of your flight confirmation!)

Terminal 2 of Budapest airport is the bigger of the two terminals.
It's nice and clean - with lots of caffees, breakfast, bars, etc.
It's about 25-30mins away with bus from Kobanya Kispest subway stop in Budapest.
Still not huge, but very well kept.
It also has a casino :))

Wizzair, the Brittannian/Polish/Hungarian flycompany, is a good alternative for the more expensive ones.
Although the times of departure are not always favourable, it's worth flying with Wizzair. You can sit where you want, so places next to the emergency exit are free in advance. If you check in early, you can enter the airplane earlier than others.

Ferihegy 1 Airport is a small but attractive airport in Budapest. Only low-cost-carriers fly from this airport, about 20 km from the citycentre. It's easy reachable by bus (number 93), followed by a ride in a metro. There are also minibusses, which cost you about EUR 15.
The airport itself contains several clean and quit places to rest; for example on the balcony on the 1st floor. From here you can have a good view at the airstrips. Several flatscreens show you which desk you have to go for cheking-in.
It's a quite modern building and it's no punishment to stay here for some hours.

There is a fixed charge service for transfer from the airport to Budapest city centre, or any hotel. The desk is on the right after exiting customs. The system uses minibuses which have no fixed route. If you give 24 hrs. notice on departure, they will collect you from your hotel. Buy a return ticket and save money! Avoid taxis unless your are really, really rich and cannot wait five minutes.
