Last time I was in Charleroi airport I noticed
on the board also Budapest. So I went looking
for the company that flew to Budapest.
It was Wizzair.com!
Almost identical system like low-cost aircraft company
Ryanair. You book on the net ...pay with your
creditcard and print the ticket yourself.
Always read the regulations like you would
do for other companies.
They even called me on my mobile that the houres
of our return flight had changed. Good service.
(and they changed for the better)
And like I said it was a pink modern comfortable
aircraft Frederik loved it. lol.
The stewards were wearing a star trek kind of uniform
and the handsome one our return flight
had even slightly pointy ears.
We loved it.
You have to pay for all the drinks or food...
Who cares. It was only two houres flying.

This is the cities main airport and its situated 24 km east of the city. It is a modern, beautiful and gives a good feeling when you arrive to the city. It is devided to 2 terminals, one to flights of Malev and the second to other companies.
There are plenty of flights to European destination and also some to America and Asia.
When you arrive to the hall there are car rental desks (Hertz, Avis, Europcar...), some changes.
There are some ways to get to the city:
-Airport minibus that will take you to any place in the city for 1800 Forint ( 8 dollars). You have to sign up and wait a few minouts for the bus.
-Centrum minibus that going out every 30 minouts and arrive to Erzsebet ter. It costs 800 Forint (3 dollars).
-Airport bus that is the cheapest way but it really not convenient.
-Taxi is maybe the most convenient but it is also the most expensive and most of the times the drivers will rip you off... the price can get to 5000-7000 Forint (25 dollars).

Delta flight 20 from Atlanta to Frankfurt Germany. The week before I left for Budapest, this same flight is diverted to Shannon Ireland. While this is not a bad destination, landing there when you expected Germany isn't a good thing! It seems that there was a note found aboard the plane claiming that there was a bomb on board.
Fast forward to Jan22, 2004.
The flight is scheduled to depart at 18:30 and boarding set to begin at 1745. At 1735, however, the gate agenst announce that the plane is going to be screened by the TSA and that they will be pulling the plane away from the gate, as well as to check every piece of baggage for whatever they were looking for.
1930 comes and we are FINALLY set to baord the plane. Except I see something I've NEVER seen on an outbound flight before. There is a line of customs agents in the Jetway to check your passport, as well as ask you about where you are going and what you are doing in Germany. In addition to this are the canine agents. I don't know what the dogs were looking for, but they didn't seem to find it.
I was getting a bit concerned about my flight to Budapest at this time as well. I only had a 1.5 hour layover in Frankfurt and we were already well over an hour behind schedule.
However, thanks to a pilot pushing the speed a little bit, and a fairly substantial tailwind the whole way over, We pulled in to Frankfurt about 10-15 minutes before I was supposed to leave on my Malev flight. And it was at the gate next to the one that we arrived at!!! :-)
Of course, you can see them unloading the luggage from my flight from Atlanta while I was sitting on the Malev 737in one of my other pictures..
Can you guess whether or not my luggage was on the same plane I was, at this point?

Here you can see the plane I arrived from the United States on while sitting in the plane that was getting ready to take me to Budapest. Of course, due to the delays leaving the U.S., I got to watch them unloading the luggage from the 777 as the 737 was pulling out of the gates to take me to Hungary.
I was in a Malev airlines 737 looking at a Delta 777.

Ferihegy International Airport is the hub of Malev Hungarian, which is what I flew to get there. It was a pleasant experience. British Airways also has numerous flights to Budapest.
I took the airport mini-bus, which was 1500 forint to anywhere you want to go in the city. The city bus is an even cheaper alternative, but the taxis will charge you too much.
Once you're in the city, go into any of the main metro stations and you can purchase transportation cards for a designated number of days. It is well worth it. I purchased a three day card that gave me access to all public transportation. The public transportation system is great. You don't HAVE to walk, but you might want to, because of all the history you'll see around you.

Malev airline is the national hungarian company.
Its terrace is a nice feature of the airport. You have to pay a small fee (100-200ft), pass through a security check and then you can have access to the terrace from where you can see the planes taking off and landing. A nice alternative to free-tax shops if you have some time to kill at the airport !!
That's where the picture has been shot from...

The airport is indeed the Ferihegy airport at about 20km from the centre of the city.
The 2A terminal is reserved for the Malev flights, the 2B for the other flights.
To get to the centre, several possibilities :
- taxi : this is apparently quite challenging not to get ripped off by the non-official taxi men, be extremely careful!
- public transport : this is possible but better know what you are doing, we've met a few travellers who have lost their afternoon trying to figure out where they were...
- rental car : the usual companies are located at the lower level of the 2B terminal
- mini-bus : maybe the easiest solution, for 2100ft, they will drop you directly to your hotel. The tickets can be purchased directly in the arrival hall.

It is 28 km from the city. There are two terminals, Hungarian Airlines MALEV flights use Terminal 2A, all other airlines use terminal 2B. You can take the bus by the airport and arrive in Moszkva ter (Moscow square), a busy and an important transport hub, where the metro passes through.

By Air : The Airport mini-bus service charges 1500 forint per person and will take you anywhere in Budapest. The bus fits about 6 persons with luggage and picks up and drops them off one by one at their doors. Add at least an hour (1 hour) to/from your airport arrival/departure time (depending on the traffic). This service is very good (safe, fast, and price is reasonable).
