Budapest at night, Budapest
I put in 5 further photos just because when you`re on the Fishermen`s bastion, it`s hard to say "ok, all done", after shooting 5 photos:)) By the way I used the horse to make these images.
On the main pic you see the biggest tower whose reconstruction has not been made yet. It will occure in the following years. Wihile the other parts of the bastion have already been refurbished recently.
I took these pictures while walking around in the Pest side. The good thing about visiting Budapest during early Autumn is that the days and the nights are beginning to be as long and that you don't need to be out late to take wonderful night shots, and it's neither too hot (can there be such a thing as "too hot"? ;)) or too cold. My pictures were taken between 6:35pm and 7:35pm. As you can see, the weather wasn't cooperating much but I still managed to get something I can show off :)
BTW can anyone tell me the name of the building on Vörösmarty tér (my fourth picture on this tip)?
The Váci utca (street) is the most famous and expensive shopping street of Budapest. In my Things to do tips you can see a more detailed description of this street.
In this tip I show you some images that I shot just before Christmas 2006.
This street is mostly very crawded.
Attention, the Váci utca is full of tourist traps, be cautious!
The Liberty Place is one of the most beautiful squares in Budapest, it`s in reality the financial centre of the city. You can find here important buildings, like the
1. National Bank (see Things to do tip later)
2. The huge secessionist building of the Hungarian Television, the ex Stock exchange of Budapest. This palace will shortly be transformed into a 5 stars Hotel and the Television will move
3. The Embassy of the United States
4. The buildings of the Inter Europa bank and of the OTP bank
5. other interesting buildings, with little cupolas
In the evening the buildings get lit up and the typical rushy business square becomes calm, ideal to take a walk...
I`ve already written about the history of the Gellért hotel. As since this building is beautifully lit up by night, I put in some photos. The illumination of the Liberty-bridge will be ready only in 2008, when the reconstruction of the bridge, wich will start in august 2007 will be finished. Than the cityscape will be even more spectacular from this viewpoint (from the corvinus University).
With the complete reconstruction of the Basilica that lasted for 18 years (1984-2002), Budapest`s main church has recieved a splendid illumination and also the Saint Stephen`s square, it`l located in has been drastically modified. No cars allowed anymore. The last fase of the works, say the "pedestrianisation" of the Zrínyi street that goes from the Chain Bridge right into the Saint Stephen square has already begun.
I put in photos in 2 different settings. I think that the setting I is closer to the reality.
In the Castle district you can easily find the best places to make good landscape photos. There are plenty of them. Maybe the most famous is the Fishermen`s Bastion, but from the Püspökkert (episcopal garden) or from the Royal palace, you can also have the possibility to shoot great night pictures.
I`ve already said, what i retained important about this square in my things to do tips. The thing, I still want to add is that after decades of neglect, now, when the reconstruction of the buildings and monuments on the Heroes square is finally finished, the square recieved a very unique night illumination. The Museum of the fine arts was lit up 2-3 month ago for the first time, I made these photos in october 2006.
The eastern part of the Palace is unfortunately not so spectaculare like before the second World war. We can see a different neoclassical cupola, we cannot see the habsburg stairs, the statues of the facade, the ornaments of the rooftop, and the reliefs of the tympanon. If the reconstruction of the Palce will begin (don`t know when), these ornaments will be reconstructed. Nontheless in the evening, thanks to the great illumination, also this part of the Palace is very spectacular. Also because of the awesome views of the city, this place worth an evening/night visit.
Note that the illumination is swiched on til midnight (in the high season until 1 A.M.) .
The Technical University was built according to Alajos Hausszmann`s (for me, the greatest hungarian architect ever) and Samu Petz`s planes, between 1901 and 1909. You can find it on the Buda side, close to the Liberty-bridge, to the south. In the period of the construction this zone was almost deserted, but nowdays, thanks to the construction of this university, it`s became a sort of "student town" or "Campus". The building is beautifully lit up by night.
As I said before, the streets of the Castle district are almost allways very quiet. This is especially valid at sunset or in the evening. You can walk almost alone in the empty and well illuminated streets. The atmosphere is simply stunning. You shouldn`t miss it!
For me the most beautiful street in Budapest is the so called "Nagykörút" (Grand Boulevard). On this street you can find lots of fantastic buildings, like the:
1.Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal.
This is undoubtly one of Budapest`s finest, oldest and most prestigous hotels. It`s almost impossible to immagine that in the 1990`s it was in a terrible shape, almost hopeless. For some years it was moreover completely deserted. Than, the famous Hotel Group, the Chorintia (Malta) bought it and with a 100 millions $ investment saved this architectal gem. Even the cupolas, destroyed in the second world war were reconstructed and nowdays it is once another time has become a perfect place for sistemation and relaxation. With the reconstruction it recieved it`s illumination wich can be seen from a big distance.
I made my photos with different settings. Maybe the setting I. is the closest to the reality.
The Corvinus University was originally built as the main building of the costums, this is why the square, it`s called Vámház tér (toll house square). Constructed between 1871 and 1874 on the planes of Miklós Ybl, in neorenassaince style. The building occupies 9500 square meters. In the second world war the buinding was heavily damaged, but fortunately it was rebuilt not much after the end of the war, according to it`s new function: in fact, from the reconstruction on, the building functions as the University of Economy. In 1989-1990 the building was once again reconstructed on the original plans of Ybl, and regained it`s previous splendor. It`s night illumination was also set up in 1990.
Unfortunatley it`s easy to make photos of the Royal Palace from the court. Yes, unfortunately. Before the devastation of the second World war in the Court there were some beautiful buildings, like the Palace of the royal bodyguards and the royal stables. These buildings could have all been restored, but this never occured.
The Royal Palace recieved it`s splendid and sophisticated illumination in 1999. Before this year the Palace was only partially lighted.
You just musn`t miss to visit at least one time during your stay the Fishermen`s Bastion. I suggest you to do it at night for 2 reasons:
1. It`s not so crawded
2.you can admire the view of the illuminated city and of course of the Bastion with the matthias church.
Note that you must pay about 2 euro if you want to go upstairs, but in winter, until the 14 of march it`s free of charge.
