Fuveszkert Botanic Garden – inside Palm-House by Zvrlj, 4 more photos Fuveszkert Botanic Garden is the oldest botanic garden in Hungary. It was founded in 1771 and moved to its current place, on the estate of the Festetics family in 1847. Nowadays it belongs to ELTE University. The garden is one of the venues of the famous Ferenc Molnar’s novel "Paul Street Boys", probably the one that had changed the least. Since 1960 it has become a nature conservation area of national value, with 7,000 species and variety of plants. Tropical and subtropical plants are housed in the monument building of Palm-House (Palmahaz) built in the 19th century. Although not very spacious, Fuveszkert Botanic Garden is very pleasant and cosy place. It is must-see for those interested in botanic or those who like novel "Paul Street Boys". Fuveszkert Botanic Garden is located in Illes street No. 25. Leave a Comment

The bunker with the "for sale" sign by MedioLatino Before and suring the WW2 the jewish habitants of Budapest had to wear a yellow star on their chest and were closed to the "pesti gettó" (Ghetto of Pest), which was the inner part of the 7th district (Area bordered by the Erzsebet korut, Rakoczi ut, Karoly korut and Kiraly utca). This Bunker is still on the corner of Karoly korut and Dob utca and it always gives me bad feelings... Recenty a For Sale ("Elado") sign appeared on it, hope someone will buy it and move it away. The siral watch-tower by MedioLatino Somewhere between the buildings of the new National Theatre and the even newer Palace of Arts, there is a spiral observation tower. I don't particulary like the building itself, but it gives a great view also on some part of the city, but more relevantly on the 2 sorrounding buildings. Leave a Comment

The beautifully reconstructed building nowdays by MedioLatino The Royal Hungarian Vocational School of Mechanics and Watchmaking was founded in 1898. It's building was made in 1900-1901 according to the plans of Gyula Partos. The eclectic building's most impressing decorations are the glass-mosaics on the main facade and under the windws of the 1st floor. These were made in the workshop of Miksa Roth, very famous Hungarian stained glass and mosaic maker of the period. After 5 renamings, the school is now called "Kando Kalman Muszaki Foiskola", Kando Kalman College of Electrical Engineering. The building is in the not so elegant but soon to be revived (hopefully) area, the 8th district, under Tavaszmezo utca 15. You can have a walk there from the Baross utca tram station (trams 4 and 6) through Horvath Mihaly ter (take the street on the left side of the church on Horvath Mihaly square). Leave a Comment

Lemon squeezer on the Chain Bridge :) by MedioLatino Walking around the other night I just found out that the Chain Bridge is a paradise for citrus lovers! It offers lemon squeezers every 5 meters! Make sure you don't leave lemon zest thrown around...and find out how to collect the juice itself...:) Getting back to serious: check for small details on this beautiful bridge as well! The Palace of Arts at night with special lighting by MedioLatino The brand new building of the Palace of Arts is housing the Hungarian National Concert Hall, The Ludwig Museum of Modern Arts and the Festival Theatre. The building is a very modern one with interesting architectural solutions. As every new building, it was subject to various political debates, and also some architectural ones, but it was finished and I like it better (as a building) then the new National Theatre. It offers various programs, but it's also worth to see it just for the building itself. There is also a bookshop and a coffehouse in the house ust in case :) Leave a Comment

Focault's pendulum in a stairway by MedioLatino Focault's famous pendulum and the demonstration of the rotation of the Earth proved with it in 1851 is a known thing for people interested in physics. But have you ever actually seen one of this pendulums? There is one here in Budapest, at the Banki Donat Technical Address: 8th district, Nepszinhaz u. 8, close to Blaha Lujza ter (M2 underground station, stop of buses 7, 173, etc and tram 4 and 6). The Oszman tumbs near the Rondella by MedioLatino In 2000, some Oszman tumbs from the age of the Oszman-Turkish reign in Hungary have been restored near the southern entrance of the Castle (the one close to the Gellert Hill). They can be found near the Rondella (the old circular bastion) of the Castle. If you walk up from Varalja street, just look right and you will notice them in the shade of a nice big tree. One of the old houses in the Castle district by MedioLatino Once up in the Castle Hill, be sure to walk around and see the smaller streets as well. Some of the houses are still wearing the same color as in the medieval times. Lots of history around! :) Try this walk: when you are at the Matthias Church, wlk in to the Horse with shiny balls (see my tips! :) and turn left on Uri utca to catch the house pictured here. Then go left again and then right so you can be heading to the Castle but have seen some more then the others! ;) Leave a Comment

Telephoto of the night-traffic on the Bridge by MedioLatino The Bridge below the St. Gellert statue offers a great view of the traffic of the Erzsebet (Elisabeth) Bridge. And it's also a good place to do a panoramic shot including the Chain Bridge, the Elisabeth Bridge and the Liberty Bridge with the buildings between them on the Pest side (Hotels, Inner City Church, Economical university...).
