Karpatia Etterem - Carpathia Restaurant, Budapest

If you want to experience everything that Hungarian cuisine has to offer, then you should try this restaurant. It dates from the 1870s and offers every traditional dish you can think of. You can listen to the gypsy band while you sip wine and dine on hortobagyi palacsinta (meat-filled pancakes with sour cream sauce). Sour cherry soup, goose liver, lecso (Hungarian vegetable stew), grey cattle salami, fish soup, roast duck with cherries, fried peppers, and poppy seed and sour cherry tart can all be sampled here. They also have seasonal menus. You are also encouraged to try one of the many different kinds of Hungarian wine or palinka (fruit brandy). The service is great too. Karpatia is one of THE places in Budapest to experience all the finest parts of Hungarian cuisine.

Favorite Dish: My favorite dish at Karpatia is the hortobagyi palacsinta: crepes filled with ground beef in a mild paprika-sour cream sauce and a glass of wine. These are the fine things of life. :)

After grabbing a local map of the area, an advert for a classic restaurant with hungarian food caught my eye. Around since 1877, the interior was certainly different and more luxuriant from the restautants along the riverside which has disappointed me the night before. Full of cosy booths, you could get quite friendly with your neighbouring table. Painted ceilings and wooden arches, it certainly feels you've stepped into the past.

The menu is your typical hungarian fare, but many with a modern twist. I started off with some tasty goulash with lovely bread, and followed up by duck legs with pancake pancakes à la Hortobagy - a transilvanian dish. Both very tasty. It was probably one of the more expensive meals on the trip, but definitely very enjoyable.

If you want high class food in a scenic restaurant I recommend karpatia.

Paid 15000 huf for 2 main dishes, 2 desserts and a recommend bottle of red wine. Had budapest card with 15% discount -that equaled the tip, so expect to pay a bit more if you dont have the card (I recommend not to purchase it in a tip).

No ! this is not a church and I went for no mistakes posting this pic here :-) ... it's called KARPATIA and even if it is a little bit touristic (Goulasch is really not the best you can have in Budapest) the nvironment is wonderful.
Live music ... then for sure you'll buy the CD.
