This elegant restaurant provides a peaceful environment with delicious local food. Menu is wide with many alternatives and they have a good wine selection. It is a pricey restaurant, but it deserves the cost. It attracts both vegetarians and meat lovers with various salads and grill options.

Alfoldi serves local Hungarian food in a friendly environment. The restaurant is small and always crowded. No fancy decoration, no extraordinary service, but delicious food with good price. Here you can taste the best goose liver in town.

This restaurant is one of the best in Budapest for the reasonable prices with the delicious food. Whole decoration is wooden which gives an authentic feeling. Even the food is served on wooden plates. Service is very friendly and satisfactory. Portions are very big and if you are not a big eater, you may not finish it all. You can find local cuisine at its best with reasonable prices. You should definitely try one of the meat dishes as well as some gulyas soup. After having a hearty meal, you would be surprised with the bill.
Favorite Dish: You can try any meal without hesitation, you will absolutely enjoy it.

Can't talk so much about good food, You've got to taste it, i actually should have put this into the "nightlife" section,
THIS RESTAURANT HAS LIVE MUSIC EVERY NIGHT,
DON'T MISS WEDNESDAYS: Hot Jazz Band, a great authentic jazz/dixieland band from Hungary!
Don't forget, the whole look of this restaurant is about an american prison from the '30ies. It's quite realisticly made, so if You have worries of the ambience, don't go there, YOu've got to be prepared for a real adventure, with perfect meal and live music everynight!
Favorite Dish: Don't remember the name, but it was a kind of chicken stew in hot spicy sauce with a kind of mixed garnish.

Red Café is one of these places we found while walking around Budapest. They have a menu with pasta, sandwiches, meat, soups and desserts as well as drinks. If the weather is nice, take your meal in their terrace located on the street.
Their menus are in Hungarian and English (and German I think) and the waitress who attended us spoke all three languages.
Favorite Dish: Hot apple strudel - un-be-lie-va-ble!

I think this place has been closed, at least I did not find anything about it in the Net. It's pity, because 20 years ago when visiting there last time I found it great place, and it was very common meeting place in the center, close to Elizabeth bridge.
That time the cafe was already 90 years old.

We didn't eat here, but just went here twice for a short stop. The first time my wife had a white hot chocolate which was absolutely delicious, and the second time we had a gulyas soup which was one of the best we had in Budapest. They also have several brands of Belgian beer.
The interior of this place is stunning!
Favorite Dish: White hot chocolate.

For already 1750 forint you can have a really good fish dish in this restaurant. The food is very tasty and the atmosphere in the place (or on the terrace) is very pleasant too. When you choose your dish, you have to choice of various side dishes (gnocchi, croquettes, cold vegetables,...) to accompany that. The service is good and very fast.
Apparently we were not the only ones who liked it, because every time we passed there, the place was packed, while the other restaurants in the neighbourhood were almost empty.
Favorite Dish: Wild boar stew in red wine, with croquettes.

We discovered this restaurant on our very first night in Budapest, and it was the perfect start for our holiday. This was exactly the kind of restaurant I was looking for: on a nice and quiet square, small, friendly service, very nice and authentic eating room, ... . It had a great atmosphere, with an open kitchen and a man playing very nice music on the harp.
We ate there twice and every time our food was delicious, as were the desserts. I can't describe it better as honest food: simple dishes that were very very well prepared.
The house wine was good, and the prices were definitely ok (more or less one third less of what we pay in Brussels).
Favorite Dish: It was a daily special, so it's not on the menu, but: Deer stew with grapes and Hungarian rösti. My god, I almost cried when my plate was finished. :-)
