This large shop is well stocked with all kinds of traditional handcraft items. Linen, blankets, clothing, wall hangings, ceramics, porcelain dolls, wooden toys, knickknacks, almost everything you can think of is there. I use the word "almost" because we asked for a hand-embroidered baby receiving blanket and they did not have it. The shops are bright and beautiful and the staffs are courteous. Seeing us comparing painted wooden eggs, the owners called a young woman out from the backroom. The young woman explained to us in her halting English about the Hungarian tradition off egg giving, and the intricacy in the way the eggs are painted. Prices are high but most products are of excellent quality, and best of all, there is no pressure from anyone of the staff. We liked this shop enough that we came back again later on that day to purchase more things.
Hungary is a country famous for handcraft. Laces are hand weaved, linen hand embroidered, clothing hand sewn and appliqué, shawls hand tied, knickknacks hand painted, there is no lack of Hungarian memory items to bring home. We bought hand-embroidered table linen for our home and for our daughter's home, hand-painted wooden eggs for our first grandchild, a hand-tied and embroidered shawl for my sister, and a hand-appliqué wool jacket for me. As an appreciation for our patronage, the shop gave us a hand-sewn and appliqué wallet.
Prices vary depending on the item and the intricacy of the design. A simple hand-painted wooden egg costs 1,700Ft, a rame-design (painted both sides and also on the space in between) at 2,300Ft. An elaborated hand-tied and embroidered shawl starts from 120,000Ft. Table linen starts at 25,000Ft and goes up to 80,000Ft. | | | | Central Market Hall (Nagy Vasarcsarnok): Food and souvenir items? That is the place to go! | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The 19th century building wes restored in 1994 to it's original splendor (not counting the canal it had before to deliver the goods directly with ships...this is long gone). The building has a nice and huge interior, which gives me the sense of an open air market. It's worth to see it from outside as well though, especially the tiles on the roof made by the famous Zsolnay manufacture.
All kinds of fresh produce, meat, fish, flowers and also souvenirs (tableclothes, etc.) on the upper level. You can get all the "famous hungarian food products" here: Pick salami, wine, Paprika from Szeged and Kalocsa, Palinka (a spirit made by fruits - I recommend taking the so called "whistling peach" - fülyülös barack palinka), goose liver, Unicum. And also of course the handmade embroided tableclothes and Halasi laces.
It depends, but souvenirs are worth to buy here due to the easy accesibility and relativly good prices. | | | | In Vino Veritas and Bortarsasag: Tokaj, Villany and other wines | Tip Rating: | | | | |
1.The "In Vino Veritas" wineshop. You can find them in the 7th district, on Dohány u.58-62 (near Blaha Lujza square metro station. From there go on Akacfa u. until Dohany u. and then turn right). 2. The "Bortarsasag" (Wine Society) wineshop. They have 4 shops in Budapest, the main one is on the side of the Castle Hill, near Moszkva ter, under Batthyany u. 59., near the corner of Ostrom u. However their shop in the center might be easer to find. This one is in Raday u. 7, near the Kalvin ter metro station.
If you come to Hungary, you definitely should buy at least some Tokaj wines, but I would say, ask the dealers for some other decent wines form the prestigious regions of Hungary (but don't pay more then 5-6000 for a bottle, the "star" winemakers are overpriced...not counting of course the Tokaji Aszú wines which are usually more expensive than this) I would say You should at least try: - Tokaji Aszú (and aybe one other Tokaji type) - a good red wine from the Villány area - a lighter red wine from the Szekszárd area
Tokaji Aszu: 3000-8000 and above other Tokaj types: 1500-5000 Villany wines: 1200-4000 Szekszard wines: 1000-3000 Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: 7th district, on Dohany u.58-62 - In Vino VeritasDirections: See above in the shop description!
