Vaci utca
  • Tip Rating:
  • The pedestrianised Vaci utca is the main shopping street of Budapest. It is filled with fancy shops and touristy cafes and restaurants. As well as that, a few nice Art-Nouveau buildings can be found in the street. The touristy Vaci utca is not the street for cheap shopping, but it is the street for people watching ...

Central Hall Market: A great experience
  • Tip Rating:
  • A visit to Budapest isn´t complete without a visit to the Central Hall Market. The large hall of the central market has been just restored. The ground floor of this massive building holds numerous meat, vegetable, fruit, cheese, bread, and wine stands.

Great Market Hall (Nagyvasarcsarnok): Get your Paprika here
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is another grand structure built for Hungary's millineum celebration and is a truly grand place. It has 3 levels and a huge range of merchandise available. We explored here one morning and found it a great place to buy souvenirs like little bags of paprika with colorfully painted spoons. There are bakers, butchers, fruit and vegetable vendors, clothes, fish and several local style fast food places. In the photo my wife in front of one of the stands selling paprika.

It is said that British PM Margaret Thatcher visited here in 1989 and delivered a historic speech from the steps of the building heralding the coming of the market economy.

    Inner City Market Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Inner City Market Hall (Belvarosi Vasarcsarnok) was built in 1897 and is much smaller than the Central Market. It has been newly restored and houses many fruit and vegetables stalls, clothes shops and food bars which serve local meals for lunch.

Mammut is a big shopping and entertainment centre near Moszkva ter. In several floors you will find shops selling cloths, shops like Vagabond, Gas, Mexx, Levis and Blombergs, and shops selling shoes and underwear etc. There are also a lot of restaurants.

To Moszkva ter you can take a bus from Castle Hill or the metro or tram from Pest.

Central market hall: My favorite market
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Central market hall by the Pest side of Freedom bridge is a gem of 19th century architecture. You can find almost everything there! The ground floor has vegetable, fruit, meat, liquor etc stalls. On the second floor you can find local grafts, gifts and food stalls for great meals. This was our favorite place to eat. Here we also shopped for fruit and vegetables and bread. There is also a big supermarket downstairs.

We bought fruit and vegetables and bread. Also we shopped at the supermarket downstairs.
We bought here all the presents to take home, paprika, liquers etc.

Much cheaper than the fancy shops for tourists at Vaci utca and around.

Mammut: The Back Of The Dinosaures
  • Tip Rating:
  • Again... it is another one of Budapests huge shopping centers... it can be caled heaven for the shoppers... the special thing about it that it was built in a prehistoric style so you can see a lot of statues and paintings of mammuts on the walls.
It is built by 2 beautiful buildings made of glass that connected by a small bridge Mammut is situated in a very centeral place, near Moskva ter so you can expect that it will be busy.
It has over 300 shops on seven floors, there are also bowling, cinema, kids land and of course a lot of restaurants.

There are a lot of shops that sell fasion, shoes, books, furniture and design and more....

Most of the prices are in western standarts but you can find some good actions, especially in the summer in the fashion shops.

A solid block of stall after goodie filled stall: The Market on Vamhaz Krt.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the largest market in the city. It has stall after stall with food, drinks, souvenirs and more for great prices. Don't miss the prices on caviar and on the blown glass filled with wines.

    Food, wine, paprika, tapestry, caviar.

It depends on what you are buying - expect prices much lower than the US.

All kinds of boutiques: Váci utca
  • Tip Rating:
  • Váci utca is a street where you can only walk in. There are no cars allowed in there.
It is full of souvenir shops, boutiques, street vendors and small to medium restaurants.

You can purchase some very tasteful and hand crafted souvenirs and maps. Many post cards, jewlery and clothes. The prices are not the best compared to other department stores or flea markets around Budapest. Often you see street musicians at Váci utca and all kinds of side show performances to entertain the visiting people.
    .
    .

Post cards, Hungarian flags, T-shirts, ice cream and of course take many pictures of the things you like. Please ask the locals before photographing them. They usually say yes to your request.

As you walk down on Váci utca, you see many vendors selling beautiful, hand made embroidery. Don't give into the temptation to buy one. There are other places in Budapest where you can buy those for a fraction of the price. I bought two hand made pillow cases and a table cloth on a flea market. These items are mainly for decoration and not for every day home use. Many people get them framed and put it on their wall as decoration.
    .
    .

    100 to 150 Ft / post card and no more than a 1000-Ft for a t-shirt.

    Grocery stores: Hungarian wines
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although you might get a larger selection if you head to a store specializing in wine, for those of us with unrefined taste buds who can't discern the hint of lavender or whiff of fruit, the grocery stores in Budapest actually carry a pretty decent selection of wines and liquor.

I bought a couple of bottles of Tokaj to bring home with me, one sweet and the other a dessert wine. I'll let you know how they are when I actually get around to drinking them.

After lugging them to London and then back home to Chicago, I was really wishing I had cracked them open earlier!!!!
