Roosevelt square is the name of the square, where you find the Acadmey and the Gresham palace, wich I find very strange, because this president in the 2nd world war bombed several times Budapest, causing inesimable damagesin the architecture... Anyway, you can find here also the Internal Ministry, projected by Zsigmond Quittner and built in 1909, and two awesome statue compositions: 1. The Széchenyi statue, work of József Engel(1880). 2.The Deák Ferenc Statue, created by Adolf Huszár, who died before the statue was completed. To finish the composition, the city assigned Adolf Keszler and Ede Mayer. The postament is Albert Schickedanz`s work. (1887) Directions: Right at the Chain Bridge

You can find this building right next to the Alexander Palace. It was built in the XVIII. century. In the period of Joseph the 2nd (1780-1792) the Carmelites had to leave the chloster. The beautiful baroque altar was brought to Sárospatak(you can still see it there in the main church of this town), and the whole complex was transformed to a fancy theatre. In 1942 the balcony fell down. After this the building were used as a weapon storage. In the wwII. also this building was havily damaged. This palace hosts today the National Dance Theatre, and the Foundation for the mantenaince of the Castle district, and you can find here a very good restaurant as well. But soon this will change: within a couple of years also the internals of this building will be recontructed for representative purposes. In fact it will be part of the office of President of the Republic. Directions: Szent György tér. Close to the Royal palace

In Szent Gyorgy ter, the big square in front of the entrance to the Royal Palace, there is the Varszinhaz (Theatre of the Castle). It was built over a church and a convent (1296). During the Turkish occupation it became a mosque and in 1736 it was rebuilt in a baroque style by Carmelitans. When Joseph II melted the Carmelitans it became a theatre. In 1800 Beethoven directed a concert. Leave a Comment Directions: All over the city.

Near Batthyany ter, along Fo utca, there is the Szent Erzsebet templom (S.Elisabeth's Church). It was built in the 1757 over a Turkish building and it original owners were the Francisians. In the 1785 it was given to the Elisabethians and they near the church created a hospital. The church has got a very nice facade. Leave a Comment Directions: Just 100 metres far from Batthyany ter.

The Deák square is one of the most important squares of the city. This is where all the 3 metro lines cross each other (the 4.th line is under construction). You can find here the Evangelical church built on plans of Mihály Pollack and János Krausz from 1799 to 1811. In 1856 it was modified by József Hild. In 1875 the tower had to be removed, because it was staticly instable. The church has just been renovated. You find the much bigger Erzsébet square next to the Deák square. The Danubius fountain originally was on the Kálvin square. This square was very badly damaged in the second world war, and than the statue was moved to it`s actual place after a long reconstruction (1955-1959). The fountain was projected by Miklós Ybl, and created by Leó Feszler in 1880. The 3 women symbolize the Tisza, the Dráva and the Száva rivers. On the top we find Neptun, the symbol of the Danube. The park has just been restored to it`s original beauty.

From Szentharomsag ter, keeping the Matyas templom on your right, you arrive to Hess Andrŕs ter. The first thing that you can see in this nice square is Hilton Hotel with a tower bell. This tower bell is a ruin of a Dominica Church of S. Nichols and you can see on it the statue of King Matyas. Today all the ruins of the church are integrated with the Hilton Hotel made by bela Pintér in 1976. The facade on the street is a baroque style, while the other facade in front of the Fishermen Bastion is made qith glass and steel. Leave a Comment Directions: From the Szentharomsag ter on your left.

Built in 1845-59, it is the world's second largest and Europe's largest synagogue, with a siting capacity of 3,000. The Romantic style is strongly mixed with Byzantine and Moorish elements. The two onion-domes are 43 metres high and even the French composer Saint-Saens, played organ there. Adjoining to the fully restored building is the Hall Of Heroes, where the Monument of Hungarian Jewish Martyrs was erected in 1991. The Jewish Museum is next door. a visit to the Holocaust memorial room is a shocking experience. The concerts held in the Synagogue are truly special. It is opened for public : Mon-Thu 10:00-17:00, Fri 10:00-15:00, Sun 10:00-14:00 from May till October; from November till April: Mon-Fri 10:00-15:00, Sun 10:00-13:00. Leave a Comment Directions: Go by: TRAM - 47, 49; BUS - 7, 7/A, 78; TROLLEY BUS - 74; UNDERGROUND - M1, M2, M3

The city took its present form in 1890s, when the Millenary Monument, the City Park, the avenue leading there with the Opera House, St. Stephen?s Basilica and the Parliament Building were constructed. Art. Nouveau was enriched by characteristically Hungarian motifs, so in Budapest it is called Hungarian Secession. Its most beautiful examples are the Museum of Applied Arts, the Post Offices Savings Bank and the Hungarian State Institute of Geology, the works of Odeon Lechner. Leave a Comment
