    The Holy Trinity Column

We stumbled upon the Holy Trinity Column while exploring the Castle District. The Column was completed in 1713 by the sculpture Philip Ungleich.

The column is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The people believed that the column would keep away the plague that ravaged the people in 1691 and 1709. It must have "worked" since they plague never returned to ravage the people.

    Ornamental Holy Trinity Column

At the square of the same name you will find the Holy Trinity Column. The column was originally scultped by Philipp Ungleich in 1710-13 but was restored in 1967.

The column commerates the people of Buda who died from two outbreaks of the plaque in 1691 and 1709.

On the pedastal of the column you will see bas reliefs sculpted by Anton Horger and at the top of the column are figures of the Holy Trinity.

    Holy Trinity Column

This column which stands in the centre of Szentháromság tér (Trinity Square), was constructed by the Council of Buda to serve as a lasting memorial to those who died in the devastating plague of 1691.
The square used to be the market place in Medieval times, is the highest point on Castle Hill.

The holy Trinity monument is located in the Buda castle district just in front of the impressive Mattyas Church.

The monument was built in 1713 by the council of the city as a mamorial for the 1691 Plague's victims , a plague that was so big that people were buried in mass graves.

At the top you will see the golden Holy Trinity , angels and saints and at the bottom you can see king David praying to end the plague.

Becuase this is the highest point in the area of the Buda castle this square was once the main marketplace.

The Trinity column located on Castle hill, can be found in the middle of Trinity Square, which was named after the statue.
This was quite a large baroque Trinity column, that was built between 1710 and 1713, to celebrate the end of the plague. By building this column, the citizens hoped the Holy Trinity would protect them from another epidemic. Residents of Budapest believed this column did its job, as the plague never returned!
At the top of the sculpture, is the Holy Trinity, then decorating the column are many statues of little angels and further down are large statues of saints. The column rests on a large pedestal adorned with bas-reliefs and the Hungarian crest.
