Matthias Church (Hungarian: Mátyás-templom) is a prominent monument in Buda Castle district. It is very similar to the Stephansdom in Vienna.

    Plague Column--Szentharomsag

by GentleSpirit Written Aug 31, 2012

The Plague Column (Szentharomsag) was erected in 1713 to honor the dead buried in mass graves. Budapest had just gotten over 4 outbreaks of the plague and the dead could not be buried separately.

    Mathias Church

This 13th Century church is currently undergoing renovation so much of its beauty is hidden under scaffolding. For years this served as the coronation place for Hungarian kings.

This cafe was just around the corner from the Matthias Church and it was a great place to sit outside, enjoy a cup of coffee and people watch. The service was both good and quick.

One of the most beautiful churches I have ever visited. Not only its exterior is amazing. Take your time to admire its interior and its colorful frescoes.

    * The name was named after the King Matthias, the main donor, and officially the church is called “Church of Our Lady”. It was built in Gothic style, in the 13 – 15 century.

Named for Mathias Corvinus, who married here in 1474. Unfortunately, it was closed when I was there so I only got to see the outside.

I didn't manage to find time to go inside, but I did find a great spot on the Pest side of Budapest to get a night time shot of Matthias Cathedral!

A church has occupied this site on castle hill since the 13th century. But it was badly damaged during the last war and greatly rebuilt in the 1960's
