    Ministry of Agriculture

The 3rd big establishment on Kossuth Square, behind the Parliament is the eclectic building of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The designer, Gyula Bukovics won the 3rd place in the competition for the plans of the Parliament, and the building (even though not as the Parliament) was built between 1895-97. The building in the first period was one of the buildings of the Ministry of Justice.

Under the arcades facing the parliament, there is a pantheon for the big personalities of the hungarian agriculture.

The Ministry of Agriculture is probably not high on your list of places to visit in Budapest. Nevertheless, it is probably on your route, and is worth a second look. The building is right next to the Museum of Ethnography and across from the Parliament (Országház), so you are undoubtedly going to be in the area if you are visiting Budapest. The reason why the building deserves a second look is because this is what the Parliament might have looked like. The structure was conceived during the contest to design a new Parliament for the country and, although it was not selected for the Parliament, the authorities decided to use the plans for the Ministry. The outside of the building is filled with plaques and monuments to famous Hungarians, as well as two obviously Socialist Realist statues dedicated to the hard-working peasants of the Hungarian Great Plain.
