Museum of Fine Arts Budapest by Zvrlj […] Works of German artists Albrecht Durer, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Baldung Grien and Lucas Cranach are part of Museum collection, as well as "The Sermon of St John the Baptist" painted by Netherlandish Pieter Bruegel. Budapest Museum of Fine Arts collection of works of Spanish artists is probably the richest in the world out of Spain – among its artworks are El Greco's "Mary Magdalene in Penitence", "Annunciation"… Francisco Goya's "Water Carrier", "Knife Grinder"… Francisco de Zurbaran's "Apostle St Andrew", Esteban Murillo's "Flight into Egypt"… "The Painter Jan Asselyn" by Frans Hals and "Admiral Sir Edward Hughes" painted by Joshua Reynolds are just some of the outstanding portraits in Museum collection. Artworks made during 19th and 20th century are not numerous. Among them are "The Wrestlers" by Gustave Courbet, Eduard Manet's "Baudelaire's Mistress Reclining", but also works of Henri de Touloude-Lautrec, Paul Gaugin, Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters… Budapest Museum of Fine Arts possess quite nice Egyptian, Ancient Greek and Roman collections. The opening ceremony of the palace was held as the final event of the Millennium celebrations on October 25th 1896. Museum collection contains many different kinds of items: furniture, jewellery, clocks, glassware, ceramics, books, prints, textile, costumes, weapons… Marvelous exhibited objects and beautiful interior decorations make Iparmuveszeti Muzeum unavoidable place for those interested in art. by belgianchocolate From 'Central' it is only a short walk to the Hungarian National Museum. The collection took a start in 1802. Some coins , some books a gift by count Ferenc Széchényi's. A lot of donators would follow that example. Now the museum houses 1 000 000 items. You can find lots of information on their website! We were impressed by the modern presentation of the items. You make a walk trough history in a couple of houres. From prehistoric time to the Hungary of the late 1980's. Especially for that period they give a very good impression. Outside you can find a Lapidarium , a collection of roman times stones. It is free with the Budapestcard. If you want to take picturs you'll need a permit that will cost ridiculously much. The cloakroom is for free , but obligate. Make sure you got enough time reservated for this museum if this is your thing. It is huge , interesting and international orientated. by belgianchocolate Monday morning , on our way. The appartment we rented was near 'Oktogon'. Which is almost the center of all public transport at the pest side. But the thing we were heading for was not really that far. We decided to walk the 'Andrassy ut' that is considered to be a bit the champs elysees of Budapest. I don't like that sort of comparisons. We ran in on the 'HOUSE OF TERROR'. I knew imediately what it was. Even on the outside this museum gave me cold thrills. It is dedicated to the victims of two tragic periods in Hungarian history. Arrow cross and and the communist terror. It was closed on monday , but even if it was open I don't want to see it. But I bet it is a very good museum , using the best thechniques and multi media like most museums we went to. Before visiting this museum it is useful to read some pages on the history of Hungary otherwise the visit will limit itself to a look at weapons, uniforms, military equipments without being able to connect them with the events they represent. The Museum of Military History has a large collection of weaponry and war memorabilia housed on two main floors. The museum has permanent collections starting with the wars against the Turks (16 - 17th century) covering the 1848 revolution and War of Independence against the Habsburg, both World Wars and the 1956 uprising, together with more modern displays showing machinery, guns and other military equipment used by the Hungarian army. On the first floor exhibits on military history during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including uniforms worn by the Hungarian Hussar regiment. In 1914 as part of the Austrian empire Hungary was on the side of Germany and lost many territories in 1918. Under Miklos Horthy, Hungary made an alliance with Nazi Germany and fought WW2 on their side. There are large display cases featuring models and battle scenes from World War II. Hungary was for the second time in the century in the camp of the losers and got dominated by the Soviet Union in 1948 under Rakosi and his Stalinist regime which led to the revolution of 1956. The displays devoted to the tragic events of the 13 days uprising in October 1956 are the most poignant by far. Remarkable are the red, white and green Hungarian flags pierced in the centre. The revolutionaries cut the communist emblem which decorated the centre of the flag. A complex and dramatic history! I would advise this museum visit to the true amateurs. Most notices are only in Hungarian, a few are in English. Open 9 - 17 h (closed on Monday) On Sunday: 10 - 18h Free entrance. Directions: N.W. corner of the castle hill

Umbrellas on a Sunny Day by dcwizard Hungary's most famous sculptor is Imre Varga, so famous that there is a small museum dedicated to his life and work. Two of his most famous Budapest works are the Raoul Wallenberg monument (District II) and the Holocaust memorial in the courtyard of the Great Synogague. This is a delightful small museum with many of his sculptures as well as paintings. And on a sunny day, the courtyard with more of his sculptures is a delightful place to look and contemplate. by belgianchocolate The museum of ethnography or the 'Néprajzi Muzeum' is among the largest of it's kind in Europe. 139 00 Hungarian objects show you the traditional culture of the Hungarian people. The building is in front of the parliament and used to house the 'royal high council'. Do I need to tell that it is a magnificient building. The amazing room shown in the picture made us quit for sure. The temporary exhibition we visited was of a very high qualtiy. Being western European we always seem to forget that other nations had bagpipe instruments in their history apart from the scottisch All sorts of decorative bagpipes. The nicest thing at the end of this temporary exhibit was the opportunity to play in a cabine the instrument yourself by a computer simulation. Wen enjoyed that a lot. The museum is internationally orientated. The texts are provided also in English and at the entrance a folder in different languages was available. Free with the Budapest card except the temporary exhibit. Leave a Comment Phone: 473-2400Directions: In front of the parliament.Other Contact: Free with the Budapest card.

by belgianchocolate Budapest has loads of museums. This was the one I liked the most. ' Hungarian Museum of Commerce and catering'. I think the museum has a huge collection and only a parth is on permanent exhibition. The definition I found in a tourist guide didn't matched the museum at all. We saw the 'Trade in Hungary in the first half of the 20th century'- exhibition. That period is my favorite. The collection includes a lot of old posters and promotional material. They also had some menu's from famous restaurants in Budapest. A complete facade and a complete interior of a shop were on display. You could have a glimps of the inside of the orient express in that period... Simply fantastic. Did you know that when a lady whent shopping in a very explusive textile store , she sits down and the people from the shop would bring all sorts of fabrics. Or that a shop had a mechanic fox terrier that knocks with his paws on the window to get attention... You will find lots of special items in this museum. We had a fantastic guided tour from an older lady.... It was great to get a sence of that early 20th century atmosphere.
