Parliament (Országház – National House) has mythical proportions in Hungarian history – which makes it a bit difficult for someone from a country like Canada to understand (the institution, maybe, but not the building). It seems a bit odd, too, that it would be the second-largest Parliament building in Europe, despite the fact that Hungary’s population is certainly not the second largest in Europe. It was started in 1885 and only completed in 1904 and its construction required the use of 40 kilo of gold and half a million precious stones. That fact alone puts the Gothic revivalist architecture to shame! The façade is decorated with various portraits of important Hungarian and Transylvanian statesmen, leaders and notables. The sheer size of the building is absolutely awe-inspiring, and, unfortunately, it makes it extremely difficult to get good shots of the building for posterity. All you can hope for is that your piecemeal collection of snapshots of the steeples and arches comes out well enough that you can piece them together into something larger. It is possible to go for a tour of the building, but its popularity with tour groups means that you should either look to arrange tickets in advance or that you should get there early, in the hopes of being at the front of the line. Kossuth Monument by grkboiler At the front of Parliament is Kossuth Lajos ter. It is full of several monuments dedicated to national heroes. The monument of Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894) is located on the north side of the square. He led an uprising against Austrian rule in 1848-1849 and won a declaration of a Hungarian republic and was named Governor. Shortly after, a series of alliances caused Russian forces to declare war on the new Hungarian republic and crushed the revolution. Kossuth fled to Turkey and spent the rest of his life traveling the West trying to bring alliances to Hungary. He was welcomed in the USA and England (where he lived for 17 years) and died in Turin, Italy. by acemj Houses of Parliament In my opinion, this 19th century structure is more impressive than its London equivalent. You can get tour information inside or at one of the many Tourinform locations throughout the city. It's worth a stroll just to experience the opulence and gradeur of what once was the center of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Leave a Comment

From whichever direction you view it, the Hungarian Parliament Building is magnificent. After a competition to choose its design, won by Imre Steindl, it was built between 1884 and 1902 and based on the Houses of Parliament in London. The public can visit the interior with guided tours but only when parliament is not in session. by easterntrekker Inspired by Westminster Abby the best view of the parliament Buildings is from the Danube. Built at the end of the nineteenth century for the millenium ,these magnificant buildings are a few minutes' walk from the Chain Bridge (along the Danube embankment), from the Inner City (through the streets leading northwards), or from Margaret Bridge. When the Parliament is not in session, visits are permitted(cameras are allowed); tours are offered in English, French, German, Russian, Hebrew, Japanese, Italian and Spanish.
