As you can see from my picture, a portion of the external part of the church was under renovation. The church is quite impressive and can be seen perched on top of Castle Hill in the "Old Town District". The church has a 700 year history and serves as a symbol of the city's rich and yet often tragic history. The building regained much of its former glory in the 19th century during the great architectual boom. Frigyes Schulek was the architect responsible for much of the work which is visible today. Not only was the church restored to its original 13th century plan but a number of early original Gothic elements were uncovered. He also added some new motifs of his own such as the diamond pattern roof tiles and gargoyles laden spire. I would recommend anyone paying a visit to this area to pay the nominal fee to view the interior of the church. I have been at Rudas Medicinal Baths (I. Döbrentei tér 9.) The Rudas Baths, located in the narrow strip of land between Gellért Hill and the River Danube superbly centrally placed, an outstanding example of architecture dating from the Turkish period. The central feature is an octagonal pool over which light is thrown from a cupola, supported by eight pillars. There are a swimming pool and six further medicinal pools. Water mineral content: slightly radioactive thermal water containing nitrates, sulphates and calcium-magnesium-hydrogen-carbonates, as well as fluoride ions in significant quantities. From 1936 up until 2005 the oldest, Turkish baths were open to men only. Since December 2005, in order to comply with a sex discrimination ruling, they have also been open to female bathers on certain days of the week. The best thermal baths I've ever seen in my life! by blint Margit Sziget is an island of park land in the middle of the Danube. It can be reached by the number 4 and 6 tramlines or you can walk there from Svent Istvan Krt (which separates districts 5 and 13) then going across Margit Hid (bridge). You can get down to the island from the middle of the bridge. It is a great place to come and relax, walk dogs or have a picnic and get away from down town Budapest even if it is down town itself! The air is cleaner and there are thousands of shades of green among the pretty flowers. You can also go to eat and drink at the tower restaurant area or one of the other bars dotted around. If you come in summer and it is hot, follow the lead of the locals and take a dip in the water park swimming pools also located here (Budapest's version of a beach). Or if you don't fancy paying for soaking up the sun by the water go down to the rivers edge and sit beside the Danube (although it is rather polluted). You can also go running here on specially laid down tracks. As you walk down to the park you will hear music playing and see a large fountain dancing to the almost 'fairground' music. Leave a Comment Address: 1138 Budapest, MargitszigetDirections: Bus No. 26 (from Nyugati pu.) serves the whole island and trams 4 and 6 stop at the entrance bridge (stop "Margitsziget").

by easterntrekker Designed by the famous French architect Ernest Gouin . It has an elegant, unobtrusive appearance, the Parisienne-stlye arch bridge forms an integral part of the surrounding landscape of Budapest. The bridge could be opened for traffic on 30 April 1876. It was blown up during W11 and recontructed a couple of years later. Address: Above the Danube

by easterntrekker It took 5 decades to complete .You can see the most precious treasure of Hungary, the mummified right fist of King Stephen in a small chaple to the left of the Main Altar. The relic is kept in an ornate glass cabinet. Insert a 100 Ft coin and the cabinet lights up. On 20th August the Holy Right is carried around the Basilica in a procession.
