Basilica by Robert_Hun Situated in the heart of the city, Szent Istvan Bazilika (or just Bazilika) is a fully renovated, spectacular cathedral. The name-giver, Saint Stephen was the first Hungarian king (around 1000 AD) who founded the Hungarian state and made Christianity general in the country. The cupola is 96 m high, just as that of the Parliament, and offers a great view of the city. A must-see is the so-called Holy Right, the right arm of King Stephen. The right tower houses the country's biggest bell of 9 tonnes. Opening hours: Mon-Sat: 0900-1700, Sun: 1300-1700 Leave a Comment Directions: Downtown, near Deak Ferenc ter (central metro station of lines M1, M2, M3)Website: www.basilica.hu

View from Szt. Istvan Basilica by rui_bijie A grandiose cupola dominates the edifice offering visitors a good view of the city from its rim. From the unique 360-degree circular lookout you can admire Budapest from a height of 65 meters. An elevator will take you most of the way up, from where you climb to the circular lookout on a spiral staircase. The Basilica of St. Stephen (which stands on the square of the same name) is Budapest's largest church holding more than 8000 worshippers. Designed by Jozsef Hild in 1845, work only began in earnest in 1851. However, Hild died before the project was complete, leaving the task of overseeing its construction to architect Mikl?s Ybl. During an inspection, Ybl was amazed to find that huge cracks had appeared in many of the building's outer walls. Less than a week after cordoning off the site, the church's vast dome tilted and collapsed. The remainder was also declared structurally unsound and demolished to make way for Ybl's neo-Renaissance design. The building, which was finally opened by Emperor Francis Joseph in 1906, also suffered terribly from allied bombing raids during World War II. In the Szent jobb k?polna (chapel of the Sacred Right) lies Catholic Hungary's most revered relic - what is claimed to be the mummified right hand of St. Stephen. For the princely sum of 60 HUF, you can get one of the resident attendants to flick a switch, lighting up the small glass case containing the hand. Eerie in the extreme. Quite rightly, however, the inside of the Basilica has been criticized as being too dark - there are simply not enough windows for such a large building. Consequently, it's hard to fully appreciate the interior decoration of the church, which includes Gyula Bencz?r's depiction of St. Stephen offering the Hungarian crown to the Virgin Mary. That said, recent improvements - which include additional lighting in the nave and the overhaul of the cathedral's organ - were part of a protracted restoration programme costing in excess of $17 million USD. Most of the funding, which was spent on the cathedral's exterior, has taken more than twenty years to complete although, judging by the results, it was certainly worth the expense! And, with the addition of an impressive piazza area, the Basilica is definitely a "must see" for first-time visitors to Budapest. Budapest has an abundence of stunning buildings and St Stephens Basilica is no exception. I absolute adored the Basilica, which was opened in 1906, and is also the biggest church in Budapest. When you go on the inside, its so overwhelming, that you are almost breathless. I loved the interior, its very intricate, with lots of beautiful drawings, gold and marble. We did not pay any admission, but if you want to go to the chamber or up the lifts to the top of the Bascilica there is a charge, unfortunately our time was running out, and we had to give it a miss. So in general, the Basilica is just a must see, its amazing! Fifty years in the making, the Basilica of St Stephen is Hungary’s largest church and the second highest in ecclesiastical ranking. Technically, it isn’t really a basilica but the sheer size of the structure has led it to be referred to in this manor. Building St Stephen’s Church Construction of the basilica began in 1851. The first architect to work on the design was Jozsef Hild, whose ideas for the structure reflected the Classical style. When Hild passed away during the construction of St Stephen’s, architect Miklos Ybl took over, adding his own touch to the basilica, which leaned more towards neo-Renaissance. A dome collapse in 1868 slowed the construction process significantly as did the death of the second architect, Miklos Ybl. The layout of the interior of the basilica and the completion of the building in 1905 was ultimately overseen by yet a third architect, Jozsef Krausz. The Basilica's Interior Krausz called upon many of Hungary’s most well-known sculptors and painters to contribute to the decoration of the inside of St Stephen’s. The incredibly ornate interior features about 50 different types of marble, elaborately decorated chapels, and many sculptures, including a bust of the basilica’s patron saint, who was the first Christian king of Hungary. Special Papal permission had to be granted in order to place the statue on the altar. You’ll also find St Stephens preserved right hand in the Chapel of the Holy Right. Many special documents and treasured works of art were stored here during World War II as the building was considered sturdy enough to withstand any bombings that might occur. In 2003, the church was given its most recent facelift and has been restored to its original grandeur. by rcsparty The square in front of St Stephen's is a great place to start your admiration of the church. It is a wide open space, with great angles for photo's. A walk through the Basilica is well worth the time, as the inside is as beautiful as the outside. The church contains the unusual artifact of St Stephens mummified right hand. It is also worth a trip to the top of the cupola, if it is a clear day. The entrance is to the right of the main doors, as you approach the church. The church was finished in 1905, after being started in the 1850's. Part of the delay attributed to the cupola's collapse in 1868. Of course a basilica is not a real basilica without important relics. In this Basilica you can find a part the right arm and the hand of the king Saint Stephen (died in 1038), Hungary`s first king. It can be found and visited in a chapel wich is accessible from the left side nave of the Basilica. To see the holy right hand in the reliquary wich is quite dark, you must drop a 100 HUF coin in the cashier. As an alternative you can also wait that other tourist do this for you:) Also the museum of the basilica is worthy of look, although it`s not too big. You can see the wonderful golden objects from the different periods of the eclesistical art. The last advice that I can give you is taking a turn around the Cupola (available in almost every big basilicas of the world). You don`t even have to climb the stairs: when the reconstruction was made also a lift was installed beside the staircase, so it`s really an easy ride.
