Saint Stephen’s Basilica is a massive basilica that is easily visible from Buda when you gaze down on the Danube from the Castle. Unfortunately, the growth of the city means that it is frequently obscured when you are in Pest itself, but it is hard not to see the top of the Basilica when you’re in its vicinity. Like so many other “historic” buildings in Budapest, this one is actually quite recent: it was only complete in 1905 (of course, it would have been done earlier, but the massive dome collapsed in 1868). The Basilica is in neo-Classical style, but with a much more somber undertone than, say, the Palace of Art or the Museum of Fine Arts. The entrance façade is much more subdued, relying more on the sheer size of the building and its two tall bell-towers to make an impression than on frills and caprices. Inside the Basilica, however, there is no end to the ornate garnishes and marble. The interior is actually quite dark, so be prepared with a good camera if you want to take pictures you can depend on of the interior. There is lots of gold leaf, especially in the altar area, which is not surprising given that the Basilica houses the mummified fist of Hungary’s first King, Stephen I. The cupola is also impressive, but for some reason the pews were blocked off when I visited, so I was only able to see it, but not photograph it. It is also possible to visit the top of the dome, from you get a great view of all of Budapest (so I’m told) owing to the fact that this and the Parliament are the two tallest buildings in the city. by acemj It's the biggest church in Budapest. The dome is 315 feet high and it can seat 8500 people! Climb up the tower and you'll be rewarded by great views and great photo opportunities. Inside it was a bit disappointing, but only because it is very dimly lit and hard to get good photos. Leave a Comment Directions: In Leopold Town. Jozsef Attila utca and Bajcsy-Zalinszky ut. You won't need directions, you'll see the dome.

After 50 years of construction, the Italian Neo-Renaissance style church was finally completed. The dome is 65 meters high! It is a very ornate and beautiful sight to behold inside; should NOT be missed. by hslowe The Right Hand of St. Stephen St. Stephen's Basilica (Bazilika) contains the mummified right hand of King St. Stephen, founder of the Hungarian state. To see this relic, head to the chapel to the left of the main altar. Drop 100 Ft in the slot, and the glass case lights up to reveal this celebrated extremity in all its gnarled brown glory. The price is the same whether you've come to venerate a holy relic or merely to indulge your morbid curiosity. Leave a Comment Other Contact: V. Szt. István tér, tel. (+36-1)

St. Stephen Basilica (Szent Istvan bazilika) is one of the most famous attractions in Budapest. The neoclassical style church that was built in 1905 and it is one of the tallest buildings in the city (96 meters) with a nice balcony to see the area. The church is named after the first king of Hungary - Stephen. Btw - inside the church you can see the hand of Stephen , a very weird thing to see. There are also a treasury room (that is a big tourist trap to my opinion - you can see the tip) and an elevator to the top of the building - where you can enjoy the view. The entrance to the church is free but the elevator is 400 Forint and also the treasury. The basilica is very close to Andrassy street and Deak Ferenc metro station. This beautiful cathedral is the biggest in Budapest. It has a very nice square surrounded by some restaurants and pubs. The interior details are amazing. You can go up to the cuppola by paying a small entrance fee. From the cuppola, you can see old city center and the buildings with a different angle. Big ceremonies and celebrations always take place in this cathedral. by MichaelFalk1969 King Stephen converted the pagan Hungarians to the catholic faith, thus making Hungary an an accepted and established nation in western Europe and drawing it out of the orthodox-byzantine-russian orbit. The St. Stephens cathedral is truly one of the most beautiful churches you will ever see. Its splendid interior will simply overawe you. It is named in the honour of the first king of hungary: Stephen. He was the person who brought Christianity to Hungary and founded the Hungarian state in 1000. There was a ceremony in the basilica when we arrived there so I found the chance to see it with full of local people. St Stephens by fishandchips This is not one of the best churchs in Europe but a goody all the same. The stained glass is fascinating as are the two towers at the front. As with much of Budapest, this structure is very big and grand.
