    The Great Synagogue

The Moorish style landmark was once the centerpiece of a vibrant Jewish community. When that community was destroyed by the nazis, the synagogue suffered neglect and disrepair. Recently, assisted by funds from abroad, the Dohany Synagogue has been renovated to its former splendor.
It is a monumental, magnificent synagogue, with a capacity of 2,964 seats (1,492 for men and 1,472 in the women’s galleries) making it one of the largest in the world.

It is the world's second largest synagogue with seating for 3,000. It was built in 1854-59. It is in Romantic style but heavily mixed with Byzantine and Moorish elements. The two domes which are onion shaped are 43 metres high. The French composer Saint-Saens played the organ in the building. Near the synagogue is a house on the Wesselenyi utca with a plaque indicating that Theodor Herzl (the founder of modern Zionism) was born there.

This is the world's second biggest synagogue today. Moorish style, designed by German architect, Ludwig Forster. Opened on 6 Sept 1859.
We didn't visit the interior but the outside is beautiful.

This building bears testament to Hungary's once thriving Jewish population almost entirely wiped out in WWII. The Synagogue was built in 1849 and is Europe's largest Synagogue.

The synagogue was just opposite our hostel and it is impressive with big domes on top. There is a plaque marking Herzls place of birth and a few kosher shops around, and some orthodox Jews too.

    Budapest Sinagogue

Go to the Museum on the first floor while waiting for a guided tour and buy some artifacts on the little shops at the entrance.

This is the central Synagogue of Budapest built in the 19 century. It is one of the largest Synagogues of the world, a reminded of the large Jewish community that used to live here before WWII
