Lovely architecture all over Budapest

by globetrott

All over Budapest you will see a lot of great buildings with beautiful architecture, although they will mostly not be mentioned in any guidebook at all.Just click on my picture and see the great details of this lovely building with nice mosaiques on the facade, not far from the big synagoge / Dohany utca Zsinagoga.I especially like the small balconies, and the towers on top of the neo-gothic building.I saw this great building in Károly Körút., exactely where Dohány utca will take you to the synagone.

University-church / Egyetemi templom

by globetrott

University-church / Egyetemi templom is certainly the most beautiful baroque church in Budapest !This church was built instead of a turkish mosque, as soon as the turques had to give up Budapest. At the main altar you may see a copy of the "Black Madonna" of Tschenstochau in Poland dating back to the year 1720.The paintings at the ceiling are made by Johann Bergl from Bohemia and the beautiful baroque pulpit was made by an unknown artist. The church is not far from Klothilden-palaces in "Papnövelde utca"take metro #3 to Kálvin tér orMetro #2 till Astoria

The Serbian Church / Szerb templom

by globetrott

The Serbian Church / Szerb templom in Pest dates back to the year 1698 when there was a large serbian colony in Budapest. The church was built by Andreas Mayerhofer and has a beautiful Ikonostase by Károly Sterios. It is a pity that the church was under restoration, while I was there in jan. 2005.The church and the small park around it is somehow like a quiet, small island between huge houses in that area, about halfway between the Elisabeth-bridge and freedom-bridge.You may enter the park and see cyrillic inscriptions at the cemetery. The church is in "Szerb utca"take Metro #3 untill Ferenciek tere

Péterffy-Palais / Péterffy palota

by globetrott

Péterffy-Palais / Péterffy palota is a good excample of a small palais built in the 18th century, when Pest was still surrounded by the medieval townwall. When you click on my picture you will see the chain at the entrance of the palais, it is necessary, because the level of the building is about 1 meter lower than all the other - more modern - buildings in that area.In 1755 the palais was built by Andreas Mayerhofer for Family Peterffy -their coat of arms is still to be seen above the entrance.Since 1831 this palais was transfered into a restaurant, called "Százéves"Péterffy-Palais / Péterffy palota is in Pesti Barnabás utca 2You may get there by tram #2 and #2AMetro M1 - get out Vörösmarty térMetro M2 - get out at Deák tér

The University-library / Egyetemi könyvtár

by globetrott

The University-library / Egyetemi könyvtár is not far from Klothilden-palace and Elisabeth-bridge.On my picture you may see the entrance-hall of the Library that dates back to the year 1637 but the building you see today was built by Antal Szklaniczky and Henrik Koch between 1873 and 1876.Umong other precious book they have 11 handwritten books of the collection of king Matthias Corvinus. The library is in the street "Ferenciek tere 10" You may get there by metro M3 and leave at Ferenciek tere

The mainchurch of Pest

by globetrott

Close to Klothildenpalace and next to the Elisabethbridge / Erzsébet hid you will see this rather small church, beeing the main church of Pest / Innerstädtische Pfarrkirche / Belvárosi plébániatemplom in the street Marcius 15.tér.This church dates back to the 12th century and looks really beautiful from inside. You may enter it freely and without restrictions, and also photography inside churches is in general no problem in Hungary.

Palais Drechsler - opposite of the Opera

by globetrott

Just opposite of the Budapest Opera I saw this interesting building, that reminded me a lot of a gothic castle or a palazzo in Venice , but in fact it was built by Ödön Lechner for the Central administration of the railways. Then it became a ballet-school and at the moment it will be totally restored and transferred into a luxury hotel.Luxury hotels are jumping up at each corner in Budapest -within a few years they will find out, how hard it is to get guests for such places...This building is opposite of the opera in Andrassy ut, and when you go behind of that building you will see the Arany Janós Theatre.

The memorial for the victims of the Holocaust

by globetrott

Behind the big Synagoge you will see this monument inside a court, memorizing the victims of the Holocaust.Imre Varga was the architect of that monument, built in 1990.Next to the Synagoge you may also visit a jewish museum and the area, where the house stood, where Theodor Herzl ( 1860-1904) was born. Theodor Herzl was a Hungarian Philosopher and founder of the modern Zionisme. The monument is inside a court surrounded by an iron-fence, and I think it looks really great with all that snow around that fence.

Arany-János-Theatre / Arany János színház

by globetrott

Arany-János-Theatre / Arany János színház is in a sidestreet almost opposite of the Opera , but easily to be overseen.Have a look at my picture-combination for the outstanding Art Deco-architecture of this building. On the right, below you may see the unique facade that attracted my attention and so I found this place accidentially.I could go into the hall to take a picture and when I left, the porter even gave me a small booklet with more infos and lots of pics about this place. The theatre was built in 1909 by Béla Lajta. The theatre is opposite of the Operabut 1 street backwards !The adress is : Paulay Ede utca 35Take metro M1 and leave at the Opera !

Postsparkasse / Postatakarékpénztár

by globetrott

Postsparkasse / Postatakarékpénztár is one of the beautiful buildings in Budapest, that you almost cannot see from the street. This lovely Art Nouveau building was made for the Postal-bank in 1899-1902 by Ödön Lechner and belongs to the National Bank today. You may get inside :Monday-Friday 09.00a.m.-01.00p.m.Wintertime and late in the afternoon is a good time to take a picture, although you may see just a tiny part of the colorful tiles, all the rest is hidden by high buildings around it and in summer even more by the leaves of the trees. The area is also a bit sensitive with the American embassy around the corner and some security checks there...

A: Try the gorgeous Gellert Spa inside the hotel----not sure how nude you want it---not like the Deco Spa in Amsterdam, but you are naked most of the time in a spa!
