Take the tram along the Danube

by globetrott

Take the tram along the Danube, it is fast and offers a great view on the Danube and most of the major sights of Budapest.Tram #2 will take you also to the famous parliament-building and its best advantage is the fact that almost all of the track is totally seperate and will not be affected of any trafic-jam of the car-trafic.On my picture you may see the oldfashioned tram and the lovely streetlights in the centre of Budapest.Public transportation in Budapest is really cheap and you may get 1-day and 3-day-tickets for all public transportations. On the link below you may get some more informations about the public transportations in Budapest !

by VZ-Pam

When you enter the metro station or board any bus, look for the little orange box as shown here & punch your ticket in with according to the arrow direction printed on ticketThere are no gates or turnstile in metro stops but make sure you punch the ticketMany transit police are waiting for you & fine you if you did not !!!

Airport bus 200E

by VZ-Pam

When you arrived in Budapest international airport Ferihegy, you can buy metro tickets from a newstand on one end of the terminal in the arrival hall as many VTers have mentioned - (Thanks!) It is a relatively small terminal compare to others, so you can find it easily. Buy at least 2 tickets (prices increases from time to time from my research & it is best to look at the current pricing from BKV web site)As of Feb 2009, a single ticket cost you HUF 290You will see the bus outside when you get out ( As mentioned, it is not a big terminal)Punch 1 ticket in the little orange machine when you board the 200E Bus & the bus will send you to Köbánya-Kispest metro station as the final stop. Then you punch another ticket when you get into the Köbánya-Kispest metro station.Remember to punch the ticket even if you think no one is watching !! A lot of transit cops are waiting for you & fine you on...

Luggage-lockers & train stations

by globetrott

There are several big trainstations in Budapest and I arrived at Budapest Keleti pu - the East-station.There you may store your luggage in automatic lockers - without electronic - you just have to insert 300 huft ( about 1,20 €uros) for 24 hours. All explanations are in Hungarian only, but you just have to put in the luggage, close the door of the box, insert 3 coins of 100 huft and take away the key.each time you open the box you have to pay again, like at any other place. These boxes are close to the train-information and the waiting-hall - search for these pictograms - they will take you to the lockers in the backpart of the station !At the station you will find 2 banks and also an ATM-machine !

Lots of steps leading up to the castle

by globetrott

A lot of steps will lead you up to the castle of Buda and the Fisher Bastion. In my opinion it is best to walk UPwards to the Fisher-Bastion first, as an ordinary street will go up the hill smoothly - just follow the few cars and the public bus. These steps are great to walk down, but upwards they are quite tireding, and walking down the steps will also offer lots of great views on the Danube and Pest.Even at night in winter these steps are fully lighted and safe, except when slippery with ice and snow of course.

Driving up by car to Fisher Bastion

by globetrott

Driving up by car to Fisher Bastion is possible, BUT you should be aware of the fact that the whole area is locked by a bar, where you will have to get a ticket and pay a fixed rate per hour, when leaving again, even when you are just parking at night.Customers of the Hilton-hotel are able to enter through a seperate gate on the left side of the gate , BUT they will get a special ticket at the reception of the hotel !Parking during the day :Car : 450 huft ( 1,50 €uros)Buses,Trucks,Vans : 1350 huft (5,3 €uros !! )For cars it is reduced to 250 huft per hours between 06.00p.m. and midnight !It is much easier and also more fun to walk up there, take a local bus or the funicular !!

Metro & other public transportation

by globetrott

There is absolutely NO need to drive around Budapest in your own car, as the public transportation-net is really good, fast and efficient.Click on my link below and see a map of the metro and some explanations. For the centre of town and when you intend to stay for just 1-2 days it might be the best to walk, when you have more time and start exploring the outskirts of Budapest, the metro will be the best to do so !On my picture : another shot of the lovely facade of "House of Photography" - see also my tips about it under "Off the beathen path"

A: Try the gorgeous Gellert Spa inside the hotel----not sure how nude you want it---not like the Deco Spa in Amsterdam, but you are naked most of the time in a spa!
