Debrecen in the Eastern Great Plains has been an important place since the Middle Ages, growing wealthy from salt, furs and cattle. In 1552, it was the center of the Calvinist movement and became known as the Calvinist Rome. By decree, only Calvinists were permitted to settle there. The Calvinist College has a museum dedicated to ecclesiastical art and a library with more than half a million books, the oldest dating from the 15th century.

Debrecen is still a haven for higher learning, featuring Lajos Kossuth University and other institutes that combine as the University of Debrecen. The old Calvinist College remains, its library famous for a 300,000 volume collection of religious and early scientific books.
Debrecen has been a university town since the Middle Ages. It was one of the "capitals" of the Revolution and Independence War in 1848-49.
The symbol of the city, the Great Church of Debrecen, with 3000 seats, is the largest Calvinist church in the country. Its interior decoration is in the severe puritan style. One treasured relic is the armchair of Lajos Kossuth who on 14th April 1849 proclaimed the dethronement of the Habsburg House here.

It was long known as the Calvinist Rome because of its importance to the reformed creeds in east-central Europe. It houses Hungary's oldest printing press, which has been operating since 1561. The independence of Hungary from the Habsburgs was proclaimed in the city by Lajos Kossuth, leader of the revolutionary government, in 1849; that revolt was subsequently quelled and the city itself captured by interventionist Russian troops. During World War II, as German troops retreated westward before the Soviet armies in 1944-45, Debrecen became briefly the seat of the interim Hungarian government.
The city moats were filled in the 19th century, and the curving side streets on the old town perimeter recall the fortification lines. On the former marketplace, now Kossuth Square, stands the impressive Reformatus Nagytemplom (Great Reformed Church). This parklike square is dominated by Kossuth's statue. In the city there is also the Deri Muzeum, the Mihaly Csokonai Theatre, and some interesting old residences, in addition to several churches and a large bathing establishment. Debrecen has three universities: Lajos Kossuth University (1912), originally a Protestant college founded in 1550; the University Medical School of Debrecen (founded 1918; independent 1951); and the Agricultural University of Debrecen (1868).
