It's quite a long way up a narrow wooden stairway, but I think the views over Debrecen are worth the effort. At least I loved them :-). Leave a Comment Address: Nagytemplom (Reformed Cathedral)Directions: Just in the very centre of the cityWebsite: http://www.debrecen.hu

Leave a Comment

This museum gives a perfect account of the history and traditions of this region - local artifacts, medieval peasant and craftsmen tools and references to the Guilds - also highlightening the local painters. The museum guards, although not being able to speak a word of English, really try to be helpful to visitors - a rare honour in the Hungarian museum panorama - guiding them through the several museum rooms full of interesting pieces introduced by notes in several languages - the majority of their captions are not translated, though. A wonderful museum nevertheless, although these days tourism is unconceivable without communication in English - like it or not, these days it is a universal language. Leave a Comment

Kossuth Statue by cobrioc Debrecen has been called the "Hungarian Geneva" and "Calvinist Rome." The city was a bulwark for Calvin's brand of Protestantism during the Reformation, as well as the intellectual center of all Hungary. Debrecen even served as temporary capital from 1848-49, after Lajos Kossuth stood up in the local Nagytemplom (Big Church), proclaiming Hungary's independence from the Hapsburg Empire. Address: Debrecen, Kossuth Square
