Debrecen is also a centre of cultural heritage preservation. The roots of higher education in Debrecen go back to the Medieval period. The Reformed College was founded in 1538. It has had a nationwide leading role in the preservation and development of Hungarian education and culture for centuries. The University of Debrecen is the second largest in Hungary, with over 23,000 students offering the widest scale of educational programs. Accordingly, scientific work and applied research also cover broad and divers areas. The Debrecen National School of Agriculture was established in 1868.

This church is the most prominent building in Debrecen. It was built between 1803 and 1822 in the classical style. It is the largest Reformed Church in Hungary, capable of seating 5,000 people.
One of the symbols of Debrecen is the Big Church which represents the city's role in religious life. For centuries the city has been known as the ,,Calvinist Rome".

Hortobagy:
26 km ten westen van Debrecen ligt de 100.000 ha grote poesta Hortobagy.
Het centrum van het Nationale Park is de beroemde Nagycsarda, een groot, langwerpig, witbepleisterd gebouw met een dak van stro. Buiten op de galerij kan men voor weinig geld genieten van een hapje en een drankje met een uitzicht over de poesta. Vroeger legde hier ook de postkoets aan.
Er zijn souvenierwinkeltjes en zigeunerinnen verkopen hun gevlochten mandjes. Soms begint het hier op een toeristische heksenketel te lijken!
De 'Brug met de negen gaten' ligt over de rivier de Hortobagy. De brug is 92 m lang en met de muren van de bruggehoofden meegerekend 167 meter.
Tijdens de markten vinden er ruiterfeesten plaats. Begin juli worden de internationale ruiterdagen gehouden. Leave a Comment
