Changing Currency

by nzbumpkin

Thinking of going to Hungary? Don't! But if you have to you're far better off changing $,£ etc. in Hungary. We changed £££ to Forint (local currency) at the airport (always a bad idea) at Travelex, at a rate of 267 - £1. We later saw it advertised an Currency Exchanges in Hungary for anywhere between 320 - 370 for every £1. Cigarettes are really cheap (600 Forint - £2) and beers also (about a £1). These two things were by far the best thing about Hungary

Introducing Budapest

by csordila

Budapest (pron. boo-dah-pesht), which became the capital of Hungary in 1873 with the unification of Pest, Buda, and Óbuda, in no time at all turned from a provincial-type center with a combined population of nearly 200 thousand into a cosmopolitan, European-style metropolis which strove to become the worthy sister-capital of Vienna in the Dual Monarchy. The people of Budapest insist that near and far (within and without the country's borders) it is the only real city (where money, pluck, spirit, brains and talent converge, even if they do not always meet), and they won't hear of living anywhere else; they are even proud of the scandals, which in their eyes are proof of the city's big-city character, and are convinced that everyone in the country envies their status; of course, with the rapid pace of development elsewhere in the country, especially in the towns of Transdanubia (Dunántúl),...

Hungary - One of the richest countries in Europe ?

by csordila

Hungary was once one of the richest countries in Europe until the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, when it lost more than 2/3 of its area and more than 1/2 of its population. Most of the sightseeings have an origin from the pre-war "happy peace era". No access to any sea since more than 80 years!!

Turkish Pecs

by Paul2001

A curious aspect of Pecs is that it is full of old Turkish monuments that seemed to have been just forgotten. There are Turkish baths, like those seen here, and a couple of 16th century mosques. The most famous of these has been turned into a church and I have provided a seperate tip about it. I think that many of these relics from Pecs past have largely been neglected because of resentment many Hungarians might have felt towards Turkish rule. Today they give the city a special atmosphere that makes Pecs seem all the more exotic.

Castle Hill in Budapest

by Paul2001

Castle Hill is home to many of Budapest's most important monuments and museums. To miss this part of the city is not to have seen Budapest or even Hungary at all. The hill, made of limestone, is 1 kilometre long. It is more a plateau with a flat top than a hill. It soars over 170m above the city and Danube River. The Hill is essentially divided into two distinct sections, the Royal Palace and the Old Town. The Palace was originally a 13th century castle where the monarch of Hungary lived (when it was not occupied by the Turks). The castle was renovated frequently and then brutally demolished during the Second World War. Today the Palace has been faithfully reconstructed and now houses several cultural institutions such as the Hungarian National Gallery, the Museum of Contemperory Art and the Museum of the History of Budapest. I only visited the first of these. The Old Town was where the...

Sziget Festival

by rollinstone81

Its a huge festival on an island in the Danube river. Lots and lots of stages, bands, food stuff (with resonable beer prices) and stuff to do. People say it used to be better before it became commercial, but I liked it anyhow. I think it was only 15 euro for a day ticket.

Excellent Source of Information

by TexasDave

We travelled thoughout Western and Central Hungary and stopped at dozens of cities and towns. Every one had a Tour Inform office, usually in the downtown or the Old City area, which was an excellent source of area maps, restaurant and lodging suggestions, etc. And all the personnel spoke English, at least to some degree. So just watch out for the Green, red, and white signs directing you to the local Tour Inform office.

Excellent dentists

by Alvernia

Dentistry was the point of our journey to Hungary. There are excellent dentists who charge about a third of usual European prices and a large proportion of Austrians and Germans visit for that purpose. We went to Mosonmagyarovar which, like all the small towns near the border, had a dentist (fogorvos) on every corner.Apart from that we thoroughly enjoyed our time there, it was a bit like 50's Britain but with Tesco, Spar, Lidl etc. Incredibly inexpensive. Do try the local drink, Unicum, and the language which is unlike any other. Goulash, fish, generally relaxing.
