A country that is spick and span

by GillianMcLaughlin

OK, I did not spend long in Hungary during my first visit, and I only visited two cities, Budapest and Szeged. However I am left with the impression of very clean places, with wastepaper bins all over the place, each of them having a charming and regularly emptied ashtray (look closely at the photo - the little lip at the top of the bin is for cigarettes). All you smokers out there, there is NO excuse for dropping you cigarette buts in the street. This photo was taken on a Sunday early morning in one of the pedestrian streets in touristville Budapest. The owner of the brus and shovel was a city employee. While he was busy clearing up here, his mates were scrubbing the roads with one of those water-vac-vans.You will see none of the Saturday night debris that litters many European capitals on a Sunday morning. I thought it was charming.

Classic Eastern European Cars - Moskovich

by GillianMcLaughlin

Well, if I knew little about the Trabbie before leaving the UK, the Moskovich was even more an enigma to me. I think I only vaguely know of its existence because of some picture cards my brother got free with a comic. Until I arrived in Budapest, just before I left Hungary, I honestly thought they had gone the way of the Dodo a long time ago. My memory was of an unlikely racing car that had gained some recognition decades before I was born. But look! Neatly parked beside our car in Budapest was a fine example of one that I can only assume was still in working order! What's more, one of my friends who was with me there, a retired Finnish academic told me he drove one in the 1970s. He did add that it ran well once he could actually start it, but the best option for doing that was to make sure it was parked at the top of a hill - not easy in his part of Finland. So here you are, a fine...

Classic Eastern European cars - Trabant

by GillianMcLaughlin

The Trabant is a car that has worked its way up from a glorified motorbike to something of a car legend, akin to the Mini and the Beetle. Having grown up in the UK I can honestly say that I had never seen one until I first began to travel in central Europe. I stopped in my tracks the first time I saw one of these cars in Hungary, thinking they had by now disappeared, and then realised that they were still widely used. My friend in Budapest told me that she found her Trabant a much more useful people carrier than the more modern car that she came to collect me in.The Trabbie, by all accounts was a bit of a manufacturing mistake. Produced originally in East Germany (an off-shoot of Audi production believe it or not) to provide a half way house between the motorbike and the car, it was further developed, and went from being a cheap way of transporting the family to an inefficient car....

BUDAPEST

by NATURAL

.By the unification of Pest, Óbuda and Buda, three cities on the borders of Danube was born the city of Budapest as it is today. The eastern bank of the Danube - the Pest side - became the site of the administration and the scene of the cultural life. The hills of Buda on west bank, offered space for villa houses and summer resorts.

Balaton lake - the beach

by croisbeauty

Coloquially called "Hungarian Riviera" the Balaton Lake offers a numerous beach resorts. Velvety sands cover the 70 km beach on the southern shores from Balatonaliga through Balatonszentgyorgy. This is un uninterrupted line of large or small resorts with bustling and teeming life, a paradise for lovers of sun and water, and particularly for families with small children.

Balaton lake - sunset2

While waiting for the sunset in area of Balaton, in particularly in the summer season, you might be disturb by huge and very thirsty mosquitos. I suggest you to put on some protecting ant-mosquito creme, otherwise you'll have to quit your shoting.

Balaton lake - sunset1

by croisbeauty

"The Hungarian Sea", so say people about the 77 km long lake with silky green-yellow water. With its surface of approximately 600 square km, it is the largest lake in Central Europe. The southern shores are ideal for small children because of the shallow water, while on the northern shore the water gets deeper immediately. The summer temperature of the water is between 20 - 26 C. The water and the silky mud of the lake are very good medicines against nervous complaints, anaemia and nervous fatigue.Take your camera with and wait sun to go down, you might have the same result or even better than this one.

Budapest

by croisbeauty

The town of Budapest is more then a capital, it is the heart of the country, the pride of Hungarians and one of the most beautiful towns in Europe. The town of Budapest was inhabited fifty thousand years ago and it has its present name for nearly 130 years: Obuda, Buda and Pest were separate towns until 1873.The underground railway connecting the Inner City with the City Park was the first on the continent and has been running fpr more than 100 years. Serving the Buda Hills you will find the world's third mountain railway and a forest light railway operated by children. For lovers of culture, the only problem is choice: there are 237 monuments, 223 museums and galleries, 35 theatres, 2 opera houses, 12 concert halls and many many more. Strolling around the town, watching the people passing by and eating the delicious Hungarian food.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU.....

by Duffelgirl

Stay a while. Ten days or so in Hungary is hardly enough to get to know this landlocked country. If I were to visit again I'd like to try horse-riding across the great plains, visit more of Lake Balaton and the surrounding areas, do a bit of cycling, visit the famous ice-caves, see the National Parks, visit many more towns and cities and improve my dire Hungarian. We managed to acquaint ourselves with tourist hotspots but with no Hungarians! Treating my body and soul to a soak in the thermal waters of Heviz. The open air, the warmth of the water, the feeling of space and being able to stare upwards into the falling snow at the huge sky to infinity was magic!

A little kindness

by tobhamor

One of the things I remember most fondly about Hungary was the help I received when I most needed it. When I missed the bus stop for my hostel and ended up heaven knows where, I went into a shop with my phrase book and guide book and asked for directions. The woman there couldn't help me but she asked the queue behind me if anyone spoke English. One man did, and he not only made sure I got back on the right bus, but he told the driver where I had to get off. Another time I got lost in the town of Miskolc (not something I would recommend!). I was wondering out of town along a main road (I didn't know I was doing this) and stopped at a service station (phrase book in hand again) and asked if there was a hotel nearby. Again, the girl working there couldn't help me but she fetched a friend of hers who spoke English, and again, put me on the right bus back into town and told me where to get...
