Szombathely -- Saturday Place

by kaloz

Szombat -- Saturday; hely -- place. Szombathely is a market town where villagers come on weekends to do their shopping. It is also the hometown of some of my Hungarian friends in Cleveland, Ohio. We went there to meet our friends family who gave us a place to stay, and we told stories of their relatives. Learning about where our friends are from, and swapping stories with their family. They were very nice, and we got a good flavor for this town. More pictures of friends in my Travelogues.

Sopron -- gateway to Fertöd

by kaloz

Sopron is an interesting town near the Austrian border. It seems that when they were drawing boundries after WWII the people of this town took a vote and decided to be Hungarian rather than Austrian, so they told us. You may wish to go to Fertöd to see the Esterházy kastély. This is where you catch the bus. Hungarian pronounciations can be tricky so it is a good idea to write things down and show the correct spelling to people, it will be easier to navigate.

Eger -- and points north

by kaloz

Eger is a wonderful town and a jumping off point to some wonderful excursions. Aggtelek for the caves, or Szilvasvarad where the horse stud for the white stallions. While in Eger, try the Eger Bikaver (Bull's Blood) wine. Hungary has many wine districts including Tokai for sweet wines.

Tokay

by cobrioc

The Tokay wine region is located along the border of Hungary and Slovakia in Central Europe. This region has some very specific soil (as do a lot of geographic specific wine regions in the world) that produces the unique flavor of the Tokay wine. Vintners have attempted to duplicate this taste in vineyards throughout the world but nothing can compare to the original Tokay from the Slovakian Tokay wine region. The countryside is beautiful, and there is much to see and taste.Wine visits could include estates like Disznoko, the Royal Tokay Company, Hetszolo, Oremus, Ch?teau Pajos, and the cellars of Istvan Szepsy, one of the most talented makers of Tokay. Visit the old state cellars, known as The Museum, where one can taste some fabulous old Tokay.

The North Hungarian Region is very reach in thermal wather and different baths. People can be find cave, spa, salvus and thermal-spring bath alike.Known all over Europe the hot springs and cave bath are the most fascinating spectacle in Miskolc. Springing from the inside of the mountain the 300 C water is rich in mineral substances and combined with an atmosphere free of pollutants, makes this indoor pool of Nature visitable all year round. Outdoor swimming-pools and sun-terraces belonging to the Cave Bath.In the newlymade cave galleries special attractions ensure that one’s stay here will be a truly memorable experience.

Castle of Sirok

by cobrioc

The castle of Sirok is one of Hungary's most beautiful rock-castles. Originally it was a pagan castle, later owned by the Bohr-Bodon line of Aba genus, whose offsprings fighted against the king with Mate Csak. In 1320 the army of Robert Karoly took over the castle, so it became the property of the King. In 1388 Laszlo Tari bought it and founded a village below the castle. It was known as a strong castle, the Turks, didn't even try to occupy it. Today only ruins left, which are similar to the surronding rocks they were made of. These walls were finally destroyed in 1713. The castle of Sirok is one of Hungary's most beautiful rock-castles.

Szalajka

by cobrioc

SZILVASVARAD AND SZALAJKA VALLEYSome of the most beautiful places of excursion in the country found in the close and wider vicinity of Szilvasvarad. The village itself is about 40 miles to the north from Eger, right near the entrance of Bukk National Park. The Museum of Lipizzan Horses is not far from the park. You may learn there the origin, history and use of the famous Lipizzan horses. Next to the Museum there is a stable where the most beautiful stallions can be found. The Museum is at 8 Park Street; the opening hours are from 9.00 to 12.00 and 13.00 to 17.00 each day except on Mondays. You could already have profited a lot from what you have seen while walking on the paths of past and future. However, generous Nature offers something even more beautiful to those who are not satisfied yet: the protean Szalajka Valley which gives you moments of ecstasy, peace and quiet any time of...

Egerszalok

by cobrioc

One of the most recent spa baths of Hungary can be found here fed by two 68oC hot springs gushing up like a geyser at the outskirts of the settlement. The accumulated minerals form, a growing white hillock here, hich, like a lunar landscape, looms over the bath.

Eger

Istvan Dobo Commander of the Eger Castle. He was the leader of the heroic defense of Eger in 1552 when he drove from its walls a Turkish army of 150 thousand with two thousand of his troops and the inhabitants of the city and its environs. They fought with great heroism and ingenuity. Istvan Dobo died in 1572 when he was 70 years old. Eger Castle visible from just about anywhere in Eger.
