From the Mátra mountains...

by joefred28

From the Mátra mountains heading toward Budapest you should stop in Gödöllõ to take a tour of the palace occupied by Franz Joseph, emperor of the former Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, and his wife Elisabeth when they were wisiting in Hungary. It is a magnificent building, it is being restored now that the troops of the former Soviet Union who were quartered in there have left.As you can see on the picture, they didn't particularly care about maintenance. Not too far from the palace is a restaurant whose name I have forgotten, but you can pick up handbills at the palace with directions. When I was there it was a beautiful day and we sat outside under shade trees and had a very nice dinner. The price was moderate.

Farther to the West, the MÅTRA mountain rises out of it's flat surroundings. At the foot of the mountainis a serene lake called Sástó,(Reed lake).Again, you can hike on the trails or rent a row boat. There are cabins on the shore for rent also.

An other wonderful place to visit is the Szechenyi fürdõ,(Bath).Thermal pools indoors and out, very relaxing and perhaps even theraputic and tickets are reasonable. If you drive there, you will probably have an awful time trying to find a parking spot. Szechenyi bath.

Statues depicting the leaders of the Hungarian tribes that settled the region in the late 9th century A.D.Youngsters on inline skates are joyfully jumping off the lower part of the statue's base to the concrete pavement.I wonder how long before their knees will be unhappy about it?

by joefred28

I would not want anybody to miss the 'BARLANGFÜRDÖ'(Cave-baths) of Miskolctapolca. The caves are man-made, but look very realistic.the caves have many sections with different temperature pools, all coming up hot from underground and mixed with cold to desired warmness. One part of the caves has a dome that imitates the night-sky, stars glow under ultraviolet lights. Those who are not 61 and 3/4 year old curmudgeons might even find it romantic.Entry fee is quite reasonable at 1000 hungarian forints. (About 3.25 U.S. dollars.Be sure to take 100 forint coins with you, you need one for each locker you want. You get your coins back when you empty the lockers. My scanned pictures didn't turn out too well, but they will give you an idea of what the place looks like.THIS PAGE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION, PLEASE CHECK AGAIN IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE. LILLAFÜRED is an other beautiful...

Budapest is undoubtedly a very beautiful place and a must-see tourist destination in Central Europe. It is only that the language is so difficult, so watch out not to be lost or in need to ask for something. One day I was trying to find my way on the central streets of the city and I was desperately looking to find somebody speaking English. I have asked a couple of young people, wearing glasses (as I thought this should be the target group), but all of them could not really communicate in English. At the end when I was hopelessly looking at my map, quite an old man approached me and said: 'Can I help you?Do you speak English, German or perhaps French?'That was a nice surprise.
