by rita79

when u come to Hungary, u must visit Budapest, its really a beautiful city at the bank of the river danube. But if u have a chance to stay longer, Szeged and Kecskemét are highly recommended to visit, they are lovely cities in the hungarian great plain. Kecskemét is a smaller but lovely town, and Szeged is a quite big city, with plenty of students, its atypical 'partytown':)There are a lot of nice buildings and museums here, and here is the river Tisza. The atmoshphere is cosmopolitan, u can find alot of students from abroad, due to the wide variety of colleges and Universities and to the lovely sights.

by lengyelp

See BUDAPEST. I won't tell too much of it, there are many wonderful pages about the 'jewel of the Danube' here on VirtualTourist. However, there are two absolute musts: go up to the Castle (more precisely to the Fishermen's Bastion) and have a look at the town. The view is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Then take a boat trip on the Danube by night, and you will fall in love with the city.

by lengyelp

Visit PÉCS, a wonderful mediterranean town in the Southern part of Hungary. Stroll along the streets, visit the Turkish mosque and other Turkish remains or the Zsolnay museum. Don't forget to see the Christian catacombs and mausoleums of the ancient Roman city of Sopianae, they are on the World Heritage list! Then go up to the mount, take a look on the city. Don't miss trying the vines of the nearby Villány region!!!

by lengyelp

Visit the Valley of Beautiful Women (Szépasszonyvölgy) in Eger. It is a place full of wine cellars. Concerning the origin of the name they say in Eger that when you are coming OUT of the valley, ALL the women are beautiful.

by lengyelp

Visit Tokaj, a picturesque little town on the Tisza and Bodrog rivers. Do not leave Hungary without tasting Tokaj wines, best if in a Tokaj cellar. As Louis the 14th of France put it, this is the 'Wine of kings and the king of wines'. By the way, the French drink it as a liqueur. They are true: it should be enjoyed only in small quantities.

by lengyelp

EGER. A beautiful baroque town in Northern Hungary, at the foot of the Bükk Mountains. In its fortress you can see the memories of its heroic past, when, in 1552, a handful of Hungarians (about 2000, including women and children) successfully defended the fortress for more than a month against a 200 thousand Turkish army. (They could take the fortress only about 40 years later.) There are still some Turkish memories in the town, including a Turkish bath and the northernmost minaret of Europe.

by lengyelp

Visit Lake Balaton, but be careful! In summer it is rather a part of Germany than of Hungary. You see everything written in German, you hear only German speech, and the prices are also not on a Hungarian, but on a German level. (This is why Hungarians are missing from there.)If you go there, forget the Southern, shallow side of the lake, if you don't like the 'sardine-in-the-box' feeling. It is better to visit the hilly Northern coast with its vineyards, the Badacsony mount, the ruins of the Szigliget fort, the Tapolca cave, the Bakony mountains. Then you will have a good and lasting impression of the region.

by davinachu

Visit Royal Palace and if you have time, visit Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History museum. There are many beautiful pictures from the 11th Century of Hungary. When we visited Hungary in August, luckily we went in its National Day. There was Firework on the bridge and it was wonderful.
