View of the Győr Castle from the Island

-------->(back from off the beaten path) If you leave the Saint Roch church, follow the riverside and if you make your way towards east, you will shortly arrive to the Castle and you can admire the walls, the Basilica and the Episcopal palace. In this island, like almost everywhere in Győr there is a park and it`s adviceable to spend a while walking along the Danube bank. A little further there is also a big obelisque and the sight from each part of the island is fantastic.
If you look to south-west-------->

The city hall of Győr

The city hall

The city hall is one of the most famous landmarks in Győr. It was built in eclectical style between 1896 and 1900 on Jenő Hübner`s plans. Altough it was Ignác Alpár, the famous architect of lots of builings in Budapest who won the tendering. When the mayor told him that the costs would exceed the budget and that the winner plan needed to be modified, he revoked the plans and so the second plan was realized. I think that this is a really nice building wich unfortunately we cannot say about the environment. At the back of the building there is the Railway station while in the opposite side you find a big wide road with intense traffic and a very ugly communist building (similar to the Ministry of the Economy in Budapest on the Margareth Avenue). So it`s not easy to enjoy the greatness of this building. It has a fancy hall in wich there is an organ so it also a concert hall. While from the tower you can enjooy a great view over the city centre and it`s numerous towers.
To reach the city centre you must go straight ahead on the Aradi vértanuk street, but I made a deviation to the left, towards the Rába river (see off the beaten path tips------------>)

Kisfaludy Sandors's bronze statue
4 more images

The western side of the square along the river Raba was closed by Vienna gate until 1809,when it became a victim of the French troops destroying the bastion.In the middle of the square there is Kisfaludy Sandors's bronze statue.
Behind the statue there is the Ott house which was named after itis richest owner.The house built in Rococo .Above the balkony the coat of arms of the Ott family can be seen.
Near the statue there is the Carmelite church.In my opinion is the most beautiful church inside i have ever seen.But there was so many people to pray inside so i cant take any photos.

The Ark of the Covenant

The 8 metre tall Baroque monument to the east of the Cathedral was constructed in 1731, at the request of Emperor Charles III (1685-1740), by the Viennese court sculptor Antonio Corradini to a design by Joseph Emanuel Fischer. The monument shows the Ark of the Covenant held aloft by two angels; legend has it that the Emperor ordered it to be made as an act of atonement for the violation of the Blessed Sacrament: during a Corpus Christi procession a soldier who was chasing a criminal is said to have knocked the Ark of the Covenant out of the hands of a priest and smashed it.

The church from the first Jesuits of Gyõr was built between 1634 and 1641 by the architect Baccio del Bianco. After the dissolution of the Jesuit Order the Benedictines became owners of the building complex (1802).

Gallery of antiquities

An interesting assortment of locally produced artworks, historical artefacts, period furniture and clothing, and treasures from various archeological digs in the area around Gyor. Unfortunately, virtually all of the museum's labels were only in Magyar, but I enjoyed the museum nonetheless. It was a bit like going through your great-aunt's attic - you never knew what you were going to find in the next room. The museum is located in one of the grandest old palaces of the city, and is worth a visit for the architecture alone.
