We had lunch in a restaurant near Goat Church on Fo Ter Square. I made a note of the name somewhere and will add it later. It is located in a lovely old cellar. The bar part had huge barrels as tables. My husband had soup and Schmalzbrot - bread and dripping. In this restaurant it was covered with chopped onion and sprinkled with paprika. I had delicious goulash soup and we both had bottles of the excellent Soproni beer.
German and some english is spoken, the garden is pleasant (when the construction next door is finished)
Favorite Dish: Fogas (pike-perch), it came with noodle soup and Somlauer Nockerl (hungarian pancake with chocolate nuts and custard)
I picked "coffeehouse" for the theme because I couldn't find "tea house" as an option.
This place has a nice atmosphere and the tea selection is great. You will hear F. Liszt playing in the background...
In the main square in Sopron near the fire tower is the restaurant of Generalis. They had a really interesting menu especially for vegetarians like me. On the day I was there though I was in the mood for a pizza. When it arrived I have to say it was one of the best pizzas I've had for years. The thin crispy base was as light as air and the topping was perfect and it cost about 4 euros. Fantastic!
A great interior and a cozy terrace. You can choose a coffee, a dessert, they have also great refreshing cocktails. After 9 p.m. (from what I remember) you will benefit from a 40 % discount (happy hours).
The food was really good, they have a salad bar and the menu contains a large selection of grilled meat dishes. The interior is decorated in American style and there is a courtyard serving as a terrace, with several big trees in it.
Favorite Dish: We opted for stripes from chicken breast roasted in wok with vegetables,
in chili-soy sauce with rice 1550 HUF, chicken steak 880 HUF and fried pancake stuffed with meat 870 HUF
The staff speak a little English and excellent German (in fact almost all the people in Sopron do so). The portions were big and the prices ok.
Favorite Dish: I recommend chicken with peach (even my husband liked it and he never likes fruits with meat).
I stopped off at Perkovatz Haz English Pub and Restaurant on my second (and last) evening in Sopron during a visit to the city in January 2006.
The pub's bright pink exterior makes it somewhat conspicuous on the picturesque square of Szechenyi Ter. It is located at the south-western end of the square, next door but one to Domotori Kaffeehaus.
The pub's interior is traditional English style, with cosy seats, wooden tables, a long wooden bar with a series of beer pumps and a jukebox. It really is a little piece of England in the heart of this small Hungarian town.
The draught beer selection is good, with both local and international (not just English) beers on tap.
There is also a food menu with the usual selection of pub fare - soups, sandwiches, steaks and puddings.
I just had a quick beer - a draught Edelweiss white beer (Cost: 570 Ft) - before bidding a fond farewell to Sopron.
I ate lunch at Corvinus on my second afternoon in Sopron during a visit to the city in January 2006.
This pizzeria/restaurant is located on the northern side of the wonderfully picturesque square of Fo'ter, inside Storno Hav (Storno House) and next to the Firewatch Tower.
The interior is decorated with dark blue painted walls and gold stars and the tables are wooden, and well set with tablecloths and candles.
The menu includes a large selection of pizzas as well as soups, entrees, fish, chicken, beef, pork, turkey and local Hungarian stews.
The waitress spoke excellent English and German and the menu appeared in English, German and Hungarian.

I paid a short visit to Cezar Pince on my second afternoon in Sopron during a visit to the city in January 2006.
It was lunchtime and I was looking for somewhere to have a meal. I saw the blue and white striped facade of Cezar Pince, located on the corner of Hatsokapu Utca and Orsolya Ter and decided to go in and have a look.
The interior consists of dark wooden chairs and tables set on two levels - the bottom of which is a cellar. It was dark and only the light of candles lit the large room. It looked very cold, with bare stone walls and uncovered floors, but it was actually well heated.
It was relatively busy. A number of locals were playing card games at some of the tables, while couples were enjoying romantic meals at other tables.
In the end, I opted not to eat in here and instead just had a Soproni beer (Cost: 250 Ft) while reading my guidebook and escaping the cold for a while.
The staff were friendly and spoke English very well.
I stopped for a hot drink at Liszt Szalon on my second morning in Sopron during a trip to the city in January 2006.
This small coffeehouse is located in the intimate Eggenberg Haz on Szent Gyorgy Utca, directly opposite St George Church. The entrance to the cafe is through a pretty courtyard.
The interior is dark with wooden tables, candlelight and posters and books commemorating the life and works of Franz Liszt and other composers. There was a short power cut while I was there, making the interior darker still.
The menu (in German and Hungarian) lists a large selection of coffees, flavoured teas and hot chocolates. The menu seemed to suggest that the cafe offered over 100 varieties of tea.

Liszt Szalon Csokolade Kave (Chocolate Coffee) - Cost: 450Ft
A glass of a sweet hybrid of hot chocolate and coffee. Topped with cream.
I stopped at Domotori Kaffeehaus for a hot drink and a cake on my first evening in Sopron during a visit to the city in January 2006.
Domotori is located on the corner of the central square of Szechenyi Ter and Erszebet Utca.
This small intimate cafe has 3 wooden tables downstairs and a large wooden spiral staircase leading to more tables upstairs.
A cake shop (with a large selection of sweet cakes and pastries) adjoins the cafe and you can order your cake from there to enjoy with your coffee.
The staff are friendly and speak a little English. However, the staff speak excellent German so if you don't know any Hungarian, you might be able to get by with a working knowledge of German. The menu is in Hungarian and German only.

Hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and a strong taste of amaretto.
Caramel cake - Cost: 260Ft
A large slice of sweet, rich caramel-topped sponge cake.
I ate at Varkerulet Sorozo Gasthaus on my first afternoon in Sopron during a visit to the city in January 2006.
This large, traditional Gasthaus with a bright yellow facade is located on Varkerulet, just a couple of minutes walk from Szechenyi Ter.
Upon entering through the front door you appear in a small bar area. A wooden door leads through to a comfortable dining area with wooden tables and chairs and a typical pub atmosphere.
The menu contains a large selection of grilled meat dishes (pork, veal, sirloin steaks, chicken), a "from the wok" selection of Chinese dishes and a selection of fish dishes. There is also a large selection of hot soups (much needed on a cold Hungarian winter's day!), other starters and appetizers and a selection of cakes and ice creams.
The drinks menu includes local draught and bottled beers, local red and white wines, hot beverages and soft drinks.
The staff are friendly and efficient and speak very good English. The menu appears in Hungarian, German and English.
Favorite Dish: I opted for:
Starter: French onion soup with toast and cheese - Cost: 380Ft
A large dish of hot, thick soup topped with a large crouton and melted white cheese. Very welcome after a cold morning of sightseeing.
Main: Roasted rice with chicken and chilli peppers - Cost: 980Ft
A large "ball shaped" portion of rice with pieces of chicken, onions, yellow and red peppers and chilli sauce. Very tasty and quite hot.
Drink: Draught Soproni beer (500ml) - Cost: 400Ft
Domotor cafe is a beautifully decorated in baroque style. You can order very good coffee, teas, great cookies, cakes and salty pastries (hmmmmm). Waitresses are polite, nice and dressed in baroque style.
In one word: perfect!
Gyogygodor means healing/curing pit (because it is located in a basement).
You can taste various types of local and Hungarian wines. Wide range! 1 liter is only 2 euros!
You can also order food: typical Hunagrain foods - beansoup, porkolt of beef/pork/sheep etc. Foods are also very cheap - appr. 2 euros!
I can highly recommend to all who want to see a place where local people go! You will see old, home-less-like (but not!), alcoholic people....:)
