Not far from Eger. Szarvasko is a picturesque village north of Eger with ruins of the castle on top of the hill.

I have read that there are two former synagogues in Eger. I am almost sure that this is one of them. It stands at Dr. Hibay Street, but unfortunately it is not possible to get in this building (high fence and closed gate).

In 1978 the town was rewarded with a Hild-medal for its excellent work in protecting the local monuments. It was also in appreciation of the town's protection of its heritage that the Hungarian seat of the ICOMOS (International Council for Monuments and Sites) was located into Eger. In connection with the outlining of Eger's history some of the local features must be mentioned. Such as the "Egri Bikaver" (Bull's Blood of Eger), which is an excellent wine, the "Egri Vez" (a type of brandy with alcoholic content) made from the middle of the 18th century and the "bujavaszon" (a special Turkish tissue). It is also important to note that in Eger thermal waters can be found with radioactive content which created the basis for a spa and later for the swimming sport.

The classical Cathedral has the largest organ in the country. The late Baroque Lyceum -today a teacher training college- has one of the most beautiful libraries in Hungary. The Spekula Observatory astronomical museum is located in the library tower. The Archiepiscopal Palace contains 250 year-old historical treasures.

If you can find the winery (not such an easy thing to do, our bus driver got lost!!) take a tour. I had 25 people with me and paid $60 for everyone to have a wine tasting that included food, about 15 bottles of wine and a tour of the facility!

North of Eger is the hill country of Hungary. Stop at Szilvasvarad to see where they stud the white stallions, then continue north to Aggtelek for the caverns.

Explore these cave dwellings - Jennie insists that they are wine cellars, but as we did not visit the interior of any of these buildings, the mystery remains unsolved ...

Geza Gardoyni, who wrote Fall of the Crescent Moon, is buried in the northern end of the castle grounds, where a memorial to the popular author stands. His much loved story tells the story of a famous siege of Eger by the Turkish army in the 16th century.

Still no clue as to what these are. Are they in fact wine cellars or are they cave dwellings? (No offence intended!)

Szarvaskõ lies at a picturesque place next to the Bükk National Park 9 kms from the baroque Eger. It's a popular place to go among guests who are looking for active holidays and like mountaineering and yet like being near a town. The village has unique environmental values, fresh air, subalpine climate and a well-arranged village outlook.
