When we were travelling in the Matra region, our guidebook recommended visiting the Károlyi Castle in Parádsasvár. The castle looked really majestic, built in red brick with black turrets, tucked away in a small valley among the forest-covered hills. Unfortunately, the castle is now a luxury hotel which does not encourage visitors. Although we kept ringing the bell for several minutes, there was no response. We admired the exterior from our viewpoint outside the gate, and then took a short hike in the surrounding forest to see the castle from different angles.
The castle consists of a group of neo-classical buildings, first built in 1827, then extended and re-modeled by the Károlyi family's architect, Miklós Ybl, in 1882.Related to:
