It was originally settled by the Celts from western Europe, then by the Romans, Germans, Avars and Franks and finally by the Magyars.
The legendary Svent Istvan (St. Stephen) was born and crowned here. He was the first King of Hungary and generally thought of as the founder. Stephen I was canonized, with his son and Bishop Gerard of Csanád, on August 20, 1083, therefore becoming one of the most popular saints in Hungary as well as king and founder.
Esztergom was the first capital in Hungary. After being destroyed by the invading Mongols and Turks it was only gradually rebuilt in the 18th and 19 century.
