Budapest has quite a lot of great Museums, for almost anything you can think of. You must visit the Museum of Fine Arts, (Szepmuveszeti Muzeum). Perhaps the finest among them. The churches are also quite spectacular, especially St. Stephen's Basilica.

Get used to the screech of car wheels and don't take offence when they try to kill you with their vehicles, or they really will try to kill you. Don't bother tipping - they always short change you anyway, and this includes banks.

People are very polite to each other in Hungary, and it is always good manners to thank people working in shops etc when leaving. Also in the compartment trains people always ask if it is ok to sit in the same compartment when other people are occupying them.

The Liquer Unicum is a national drink in Hungary, and is well worth trying, just so you can say that you tried it.Be warned it is very strong and will probably cause you to catch your breath, other people it may make you feel ill but that's ok as it is supposed to have medicinal qualities :-)

Now a lot of people may find this a bit silly - but as I stated above a lot of the trains in Hungary are of the compartment type. This may seem normal to a lot of people but for me it was wonderful as I had not been in a compartment train since I was really really young - way back in the 1970's, so it was wonderful to be able to do it once more.

A funny story - My friend and I were walking about Budapest, just up from Heroes Square and a car from Slovakia pulls up beside us with a family in it. The driver rolls down the window and asks me - in English - 'Do you know where the zoo is?' - 'Sorry' I replied ' I know it is around here somewhere but we are unsure to where it is'. 'You are not from Budapest?' the Slovakian driver asks me still speaking English, 'No' I reply feeling a little confused. 'Ok then, we go look for it' was the Slovakian's answer and off they drove. This left me a little confused but proud of one thing - I guess when we were in Budapest we did not look like typical tourists :-)

An obvious one this but you would be surprised by the people who do not realise this. Just because you are in a country where the language may be different from your own, never asume that the native people will not understand what you are saying. As happened to me and my friend - again not looking like tourists - being in a lift in the hotel with some people who never realised that firstly we both could understand what they were saying and secondly we were finding it very hard to keep a straight face :-) I did not have the heart to mention it them.

A little story, while we were in the Basilica I met and got talking to a person from the USA. It did not strike me until later that this was the first person, with the exception of my friend, that I had had a conversation with in English since I had arrived in Hungary. Amazing but true - he was taking pictures inside the Basilica although he had the wrong type of film for the darker conditions.I wonder if they ever turned out???
