Blagovestenska Church in Szentendre by Paul2001 The Blagovestenska Church in Szentendre's central square is probably the most visited of that towns many churches. It was built in the High Baroque style in 1754. This gives the church a western look not unlike any other that you might find in the region around Budapest but one you walk inside it is like you entered Greece. This is because of all the Orthodox Church iconostasis, related furnishings and incense. The church is usually packed with visitors who seem to trample through by the busload. Sadly this will interfer with your attempt to examine the religious icons inside which are quite interesting. It costs 200Ft to visit the interior of the Blagovestenska Church which is open daily during the tourist season. Leave a Comment

The Mosque Church in Pecs by Paul2001 The Mosque Church dominates the town square in central Pecs. The church was, well originally a church, but then the Turks came in the 16th century and demolished the original and built a mosque onto. The stones of the first church were used to build the mosque. When the Christians reclaimed the ground they pulled down the minaret which is rather sad. The most impressive feature of the Mosque Church is the green copper dome. It certainly looks the part of a Turkish mosque. The interior, less interesting, has other Turkish features such as the glass windows, arches and mihrab. It is free to enter the Mosque Church which is open daily. Leave a Comment

The Great Hungarian Plains ":*?`*:?~My?tic?l~?:*. by budapest8 Whenever Hungary is mentioned somewhere throughout the world, it is sure that the Puszta and the Hortobagy is also referred to. Hortobagy's name was made famous by descriptions of scientists, travellers, artists and tourists, however it is more and more often mentioned as the first national park of Hungary. Its valuable landscape, rich fauna and flora, special ethnographic and cultural historic relics together make this region an irreplaceable wealth and a national treasure. Leave a Comment

Fishemen's Bastion by cobrioc Hungary's capital straddles a gentle curve in the Danube. The city is well laid-out, rarely confusing, and ideal for walking. The walled Castle District is the premier destination and contains some of Budapest's most important monuments and museums. It consists of two district parts: the Old Town and the Royal Palace. Decorative churches and the famous Fishermen's Bastion. South of the Old Town is the Royal Palace , houses a number of museums, including the National Gallery. The oldest and most intersting parts of the city is O"buda. The area is remarkeble for its Roman riuns. North of O'buda is the Roman civilian town of Aquincum, the most complete in Hungary. The Aquincum Museum tries to put it all in perspective, unfortunately only in Hungarian.

by Paul2001 The Modern Art Museum in Pecs is a rather small gallery that might interest those who are fascinating by Hungarian art created in the lastone hundred and fifty years. There are few if any recognizable names on display unless you are schooled in Hungarian art but some of the works on display were quite good. I was impressed by the sculpture gallery in the quad outside of the museum. The gallery is located on Kaptalan utca 4. Leave a Comment

Stormy Hortobagy-puszta. Painting by Tivadar by budapest8 Hortobagy is a saliferous , grassy desert of 115 km2. The famous romantic, wind-swept plain of the Hortobagy ranges form the Tisza river to the edge of the Hajdusag region, where via the smaller region called Hajdahat it borders Debrecen. The landscape was primarily shaped by the waters, mainly by the huge floods of the river Tisza. The memories of the ancient tide area are preserved in the vast marshes, revitalized by now through artificial water supplies. The alluviums of the river Tisza rich in salt took a main part in initiating the solonetz soils covered by short grass pasture lands. The Hortobagy region was settled as early as the Neolithic age. Towards the end of the 1st century the Jazig people of Iranian origin settled down on the steppe-like territories east of the river Tisza and turned to agriculture. From their time on, the life on the plains was intertwined with extensive livestock keeping and pastoral life. The settlements founded by the conquering Hungarians in the 10th-13th centuries were demolished and abandoned during the Tartar and Turkish rule. By 1460 the area was already described as a "puszta", which denoted an uninhibited place. The inhabitants never resettled these places, but have utilized them for extensive livestock keeping ever since. This is why the sight of ancient Hungarian domestic animals - the Hungarian gray longhorn cattle, the spiral-horn "Racka" sheep and Nonius horses-, herdsmen, shepherds and horse-herds are indispensable accessories of the landscape. The horse shows revive the traditions of the hors-herds of old times and include the famous five-in-hand driving. The landscape of the Hortobagy National Park preserves intact and visible the evidence of its traditional use over more than two millennia and represents the harmonious interaction between human beings and nature Leave a Comment

Esterházy kastély by kaloz Modeled after Versaille, this country castle is a wonderful place to visit. Hayden composed there and a museum hold many original works. You have to catch an autobus from Sopron. WARNING say autobus as bus is the Hungarian word for f**k. Fertöd was funny because when we got off the autobus and asked for directions, no one seemed to know what we were looking for (haha). Those Hungarian vowel sounds are very hard for me to pronounce.
