The Estergomi Bazilica is impossible to miss, its imposing bulk sitting high on a town hilltop. In fact, this was our sole clue as to which direction to point our shoes in when we left the tiny train station (I wish I had a picture of the platform now, but alas, this was from our pre-digital travels). The train station is a brisk hour march from the basillica, and the one departing train of the day came (and left!) early--so make sure you get to train stations early outside of Budapest if our experience in Esztergom is anything to go by. The train was confortable and clean, if not punctual. Leave a Comment

The buildings and churches of Esztergom were often painted in vibrant colors, and it was a pleasure to just walk around the quiet town aimlessly. In the backdrop are the hills surrounding the town, with small plots of farmland similar to those found along most of the route between Budapest and the northern border here. The farm plots are rectangular, narrow plots of land, with a small one or two room shack on the uphill end of the plot. They were completely surrounded my low grey wooden fences, covering the hillside like tiles. They looked well tended, and the land was very green on this chilly, sunny march morning. Incongruously, there was an occasional satellite TV dish perched on a shack roof. Leave a Comment
