by croisbeauty

Szigetvar a small town in the Southern part of Hungary. It has signification for Croatian history too, because duke Nikola Šubiæ Zrinski died here in a battle against Ottomans. Due to his great courage in that battle and heroic death, Ottoman Emperor have payed him respect by not cuting his head, what they usualy did to their enemies.

by lengyelp

Visit the village of Szilvásvárad in the Bükk Mountains. You can see the prehistoric man's cave, eat trout bred in the Szalajka brook (the best when smoked), visit the Fátyol (Veil) Waterfall and the open-air Forest Museum, or watch the Lipica horses. They often have different horse-riding and carriage-driving championships as well, not only an Hungarian but also on international level.

by klaudio

The tourist go to Hungary because of the capital, Budapest, but all the country is full of interesting cities, castles parks and landscapes. I think the most beautiful city is Eger.It is located in the north-western part of the country, between two chains of mountains, surrounded by forests, near the bukki national park. Here you can see the old castle, the cathedral and the most northern minaret in europe, and you can try the besthungarian red wine, the bull's blood of Eger (Egri bikaver). If you like riding you can go to the national stud in Szilvasvarad, near Eger in the Bukk mountains.

Gyekenyes - small community on the Croatian border. We were stuck there for 8 hours waiting for a connecting train!! Do not miss this opportunity to mingle with the locals, and inspect railtracks...on second thought..do avoid it!! :-)

THE HIGHPOINT OF HUNGARY IS...

by marko727

THE HIGHPOINT OF HUNGARY IS MT. KEKES. ELEVATION IS 3330 FEET (1015 METERS). YOU CAN DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE TO THE TOP. HERE IS A TRAVEL LOG EXCERPT FROM THE WEB:We knew that the highpoint of Hungary - Kekes Mountain (10,989') was a drive up so on day twelve we headed for it and our challenge was negotiating a myriad of seldom signed, backcountry roads. Through trial and error, we finally found it, again in a white out. There was a rustic, very narrow multi-story hotel and a massive, wide concrete television station building disappearing into the clouds at the summit. We couldn't go up to the observation floor at the top of the hotel since they would only take Hungarian currency which we hadn't been able to obtain. Fortunately at the nearby souvenir and snack stands, the local young operators were more than happy to trade their goods for anything we were willing to give up - which for me...

The thermal lake at Hévíz,...

by Rob_K

The thermal lake at Hévíz, near Keszthely in western Hungary, is a must for an unusual day out.The lake is heated by natural thermal springs, which means the lake is open year-round, even in winter when the surrounding trees are covered in snow. The springs also allow water-lilies to grow in the lake, as well as giving it a rather sulphorous smell (the same water also supplies the showers when you get out...)Hévíz seems to be something of a resort for elderly Hungarians - the water is meant to be good for rheumatism and arthritis! You can hire rubber rings to float around in the lake too. Just remember not to stay in the water for too long - apparently it is radioactive!

There's a lot of beautiful little towns. E.g. you should visit Eger (ca. 70 km northeast from Budapest), Veszprém (15 km north from the Lake Balaton), Kõszeg (directly at the Austrian border) and Szentendre, of course (there's a quite good train to Szentendre from Budapest, from the Batthyány Square, 2nd (red) metro line)
