Thousands of locks on a small gate / fence. A legend goes that if you put a lock on this fence, you will have eternal love. Couples place locks, sometimes with their name inscribed in them. People also put them here when they graduate from college or high school. Actually if you keep walking down on the same street, you will see a second fence, also filled with locks. By now the small iron railings in Janus Pannonius street has been covered with "memorial" locks. It was a couple from Szeged, who - on their visit to Pécs - put the first lock on the railings as a pledge to return to the city. Since then it has become a custom for lovers to leave locks on the railing to make sure their love will never end.

The Hungarian National Theatre of Pecs was built between 1893-1895 in neo-Renaissance style according to the designes of Lang and Steinhardt. The alegoric reliefs on its facade were depicting by Vorosmarty, Erkel, Csiky and Kisfaludy. Leave a Comment
