The roads leading out of Sopianae, the Roman predecessor of Pécs to the north and northeast were edged by cemeteries. Very significant sepulchral structures have been found since 1780 from the Barbican to Széchenyi Square. These were constructed in the 4th century A.D. This two-storey structure of the cemetery consists of a subterranean crypt and a chapel built above it. The walls of the crypt are decorated with murals imitating marble incrustation, Bible related themes (The Fall, Daniel in the lions den, Paradise).

The word for hill and mountain are the same in Hungarian (HEGY),
Well the poor Magyars don`t really have any REAL mountains, coming from
Asian Plains years and years ago.
On the Misina mountaintop stands the 175 metre high TV and lookout tower.
Looking down from the top, southwards you can see the town of Pecs
and the Baranya Hills, further the Villanyi Mountains, eastwards the Zengo,
westwards the Tubes, and on the North the Mecsek.

Up on Rokus Hill, in a picturesque setting, stands the tomb of Idriss Baba. According to the controversial sources, Idriss was either a physician or a fortune teller. But he certainly lived in Pecs in the second half of the 16th century, and probably came to the country with the Turkish occupiers or with the first Turkish settlers. After his death local people regarded him as a saint and his tomb became a place of pilgrimage.
If as lovers of Allah you wish to rise
turn to Layla with sincerity in your eyes.
From all who scorn your love turn away
and travel to Allah's lovers wherever you may.
But if your love is totally sincere
you'll see Allah's lovers by staying here.
And if your heart's vision is pure and fair
You'll see Her lights shining everywhere
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
Remember Allah all of the time,
it erases faults and makes you sublime.
Serve the Best of creation and imitate him,
Prophet Muhammad, peace upon him.
Everywhere see the Creator's Light,
He makes everything turn out right.
Everything in this world comes as a sign --
Follow Allah and His Prophet--you'll shine.
Beware of evil, beware of you!
What you believe is what you do!
As-salaam 'alaikum!

Sopianae, as it was called in roman times, was founded in the 2nd century. It was an important centre of early Christianty. The necropolis consisting of 16 buildings is a unique architectural ensemble of the 4th century, and the UNESCO recognized its special value by making it part of the World Heritage in 2000. Our most significant old Christian memorial is the two-tiered ancient Christian Mausoleum, where wall paintings and the remnants of three sarcophagi have been found in the sepulchre. The burial vault of jars can be approached from Dom Square.
Justification for Inscription for UNESCO
Criterion (iii): The burial chambers and memorial chapels of the Sopianae cemetery bear outstanding testimony to the strength and faith of the Christian communities of Late Roman Europe. Criterion (iv): The unique Early Christian sepulchral art and architecture of the northern and western Roman provinces is exceptionally well and fully illustrated by the Sopianae cemetery at Pecs.

I`m not a great fan of zoos in general but it`s a small zoo
and up in the Mecsek Hills.
'Built by the voluntary work of the people of Pecs within 45,367 working hours in 1960-1961.' This writing can be read on the wall of the entrance. The Zoo, which is situated in a forest, houses hundreds of species native to Hungary. Besides, exotic animals from other continents can be found here as well.

There are lots of different statues, sculptures,
and modern works of art all around the city.
Even in Prehistoric Ages man found shelter and a place to settle down here. Protected by the Mecsek Mountains, the Roman town, Sopianae, evolved here 2000 years ago and by the end of the 3rd century it became an administrative centre of Pannonia. Perhaps the Romans, who came from Italy, did not feel at home in the area accidentally, and probably our present visitors from Italy feel the same way. Indeed: is there another city in Hungary with a stronger Italian atmosphere? If you glance over the main square and the mosque's white-hot stones on a summer day or walk in Jokai Square in an afternoon, early evening or along the promenade, amidst the terraces of the cafes and restaurants of Kiraly Street and finally have a rest by the fountains at the theatre, you can easily feel yourself in Italy. When approaching the city from the south, it looks like we were travelling among the hills of Tuscany or Lazio.

National Theatre of Pecs
The official opening of the theatre was held on 5th October, 1895. For this occasion the local newspaper ‘Pécsi Napló’ issued a special edition to welcome the new theatre. The first performance of the company was ‘Bánk bán’, an opera by one of the greatest Hungarian composers Ferenc Erkel, which had a great success. In 1986, due to its dangerous condition, the theatre was closed down and the reconstruction of the whole building was completed only in 1991. The renovations and technical modernization of the building made it possible to meet the demands of today audience night after night.

The Zsolnay ceramics collection is hosted in one of the oldest (first mentioned in 1324)

The memorial room contains pieces of furniture and ornaments

sculptor of Hungarian origin. This exhibition, which displays the most

of the family, is in the oldest known dwelling-house of Pécs.
The Zsolnay family rapidly became well-known and highly appreciated in Europe, due to the strong leadership of the founder Vilmos Zsolnay. The family were perceptive and their experimental nature in historical and Art Nouveau styles made the Zsolnay ceramics successful at many fairs and exhibitions (Paris, London, Milan, Torino, California US). Numerous buildings belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy were also decorated with Zsolnay tiles. The most famous invention of the factory was the creation of 'eosin', a metallic shiny glaze on ceramics.
Since 1989 an additional interior and gallery have displayed the furniture and the pictures painted by members of the Zsolnay family.

Baranya County Museum Authority - Endre Nemes Museum
The 18th century Baroque canonry houses the exhibition of the
painter Endre Nemes, based on the collection donated to his birthplace,
Pecsvarad. His paintings suggest a cold, unconscious future with the fears
of an inhuman life.
The last work of the sculptor Erzsébet Schaar: "The Street"
A The 18th century prebendal building houses the collection of
Endre Nemes (1909-1985) who was born in Pécsvárad.
He was educated in Prague, then moved to Sweden in 1940.
A certain unique "rationalistic surrealism" is the main quality
of his oeuvre. He evokes the fragments of the cold and materialistic
world of European culture and civilization.
Some of his main works on show: Unveiling of the night (1938); Close to the electric chair (1979); Bird and girl (1951).
