Easy to get to - take the HEV train from the Buda side. Only takes about 40 minutes and is very cheap. The train will say Szentendre on it and I think there is one every 30 minutes.

Pic from museum of public transport in Szentendre

Szentendre is only a dozen kilometers from Budapest. The most comfortable is of course to go there by your own car, but in this case there can be a little snag with parking there. In the town there are a few parking places, but usually you can not simply leave your car in the street, because it is prohibited.

Another way to go to Szentendre is taking the commuter HEV train. It goes from Budapest every 10-30 minutes (from Batthyany ter, where this line is connected with the metro). This way is not expensive and takes about 40 minuts. To the boundary of Budapest regular tickets are valid, but beyond there you must buy another one. To avoid problems with conductors you better buy a ticket at the station. More info e.g. schedules, tickets etc., you can find and the BKV website: http://www.bkv.hu/ (also in English).

You can also get a bus from Budapest (approx 1 per hour), going from the Arpad hid station.

The most interesting method of reaching Szentendre will probably going the by ship. Ships go there both from Buda (Batthyany ter) and Pest (Vigado ter) three times a day or so. The journey takes about an hour and a half and the ticket is about 1000 forints (~4 euro).

For more details about transport to Szentendre you can look at the Regional Environmental Center website:

Danube - Szentendre - Hungary

I would suggest that you'll take the HEV train around noon from Budapest to Szentendre and at 5 pm you'll take the boat back to Budapest.

The HEV train from Budapest to Szentendre rides every 30 minutes from Batthyany ter and will cost you HUF 391 (one way ticket).

From Budapest's Batthyany Ter metro station, take the HEV train to Szentendre. It is the last stop on the line. Make sure you get a return ticket to make it easier. The train ride lasts about a half hour.

Once you get to Szentendre, it is about a 10 min. walk to town. Take Kossuth Lajos utca and at the fork in the road go right (Dumtsa Jeno utca). Stay on this road and you will run into the center of town.

By train to Budapest

The perfect way to get to Budapest, when you are staying in Szentendre is to take the HEV-train. This is the regional connection. In summertime this train goes to Budapest every 20 minutes.

You can get out in Buda, at the Bathyani Ter. For a two-ways ticket you pay only € 4,-.

Attention: Be prepared. The railway is not different from the paved roads in Hungary. It´s sometimes seemes as if the train drives off-road!

The station is to be found at the leftside of the mainroad from Budapest towards Esztergom. In the centre of Szentendre.

When you visit Szentendre, it´s the easiest to park your car at the Danube-bank, at the eastside of the citycentre. From here it is only a few hunderd meters walking towards the Fö Ter.

Attention: in Szentendre you won´t find a machine selling parking tickets. There always is a youngster around who sells you a ticket.

HEV from Budapest

Getting to Szentendre from Budapest is a snap. Just go to the Batthyany ter metro and take the HEV train. It is well marked and they run about every 10-15 minutes. The trip takes about 40 minutes each way. Fare is about $2 with the Budapest card.

When you arrive at the train station in Szentendre you will be on the south side of town and the way into the center is not marked. I got these directions from a Rick Steves book and they worked okay. "Leave through the side of the HEV station and cut through the bus station lot. Cross the busy road at the stoplight, bear left, and follow Dunakorzo along the river into town (about a 10 minute walk)."

We went to Szentendre by car and returned by train. The train trip was good because you can see some of the metropolitan areas where the locals live, very hard to do when you have limited time in a big city.

It was easy to find the train station for the return trip, just keep walking down the main street and follow the signs, it only took 10 or so minutes. We were lucky there was a train at the station ready to go, I did not have tickets and went to the ticket seller and had a problem as she could not speak English, she gave me 10 tickets at enormous cost but we soon settled on 2.This happens when you get out of the city, I never had a problem in Budapest.

If you are travelling from Budapest you catch the train at Batthyany ter on the Buda side. I recommend you find out the times the train leaves for the return journey.
