    Magical athmosphere

by Raimix Written Mar 24, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Favorite thing:
As I said before, I havent seen much mountains in my live. The most interesting thing was panorama. I just can imagine, how much area had seen medieval soldiers from this castle and how they like Visegrad overally. There is so remains of lower castle too and the medieval gates then coming to Visegrad's entrance.

As I heard, this small city (or village) was capital of Hungary long time ago. It was good place to build fortress and capital city mostly due to excelent landscape.

    Me and panorama

    The Visegrád-Group

by globetrott Written Jun 28, 2015

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Favorite thing: The Visegrád-Group

Already in the year 1335 the castle of Visegrad became a meeting-point for the 3 kings of Poland, Bohemia and Hungary. Visegrad was at that time the seat of the hugarian king and they decided an extensive cooperation in economy and Politics.

Fondest memory: And a similar meeting of the 3 heads of Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia happened in 1991 and their aim was a cooperation in many fields of economy and politics and they formed a Pendant to the Benelux-states with the final aim to get part of the EU and the NATO some day.
In 1993 Czechoslovakia was split into 2 countries: Czech Republic & Slovakia and so the Visegrád-Group has now 4 members.

by globetrott Updated Jun 28, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Visegrad: the Romans had built a Castle there already

The Roman Empire had built a castel already at the place of the Visegrad upper castle and they called it Visegrad-Sibik. It was a perfect place to control the ship-trafic on the Danube.
In the year 1009 the hungarian tribes took over the area and started to build a large castle on top of the roman castel

Fondest memory: Visegrad castle is open for visitors:
all year long daily except Mondays: 09.00am - 05.00pm
and it will also be open on Mondays that are public Holidays !!!

in 1325 Visegrad became the capital

by globetrott Written Jun 28, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: In 1325 Visegard became the capital of Hungaria, when King Karl I moved his residence from Temesvar to Visegard. In 1408 Buda became the capital, but Visegrad did not loose its importance. In the contrary: it was expanded and more buildings added and from 1476 onwards italian artists were hired in order to add a scenic Renaissance-palace.
In 1544 the castle was conquered by Turque troops and it was almost totally destroyed by them, when they had to retreat in 1685.

Fondest memory: Visegrad castle is open for visitors:
all year long daily except Mondays: 09.00am - 05.00pm
and it will also be open on Mondays that are public Holidays !!!
