Sir Lancelot: Unique experience

This is a madly fun place ! A re-creation of a Medieval banqueting hall with suits of armour, serving wenches and huge plates of meaty delights ! Not cheap but great for a special night out with friends. You eat with your fingers and get bibs tied around you for the dribbles. Beer and wine served in huge pottery mugs. It's cheesy and great fun. Vegetarians beware though, you will end up with a bowl of onion soup and thats all ! Gigantic roast meat trencher to share !

Sir Lancelot - Lovagi étterem: I hope you're hungry

When you arrive you are greeted by busty waitresses who seat you at your table and fasten a bib around your neck! They then bring out a cup full of steak knives (no forks). When the food comes out you wish you had shared your meal. The servings are huge and delicious. Did not have a single complaint. The food is eaten with your hands in true medieval style. The place is decorated with all sorts of medieval style furnishings, weapons and armour. I got the "Master of the Hunt's favourite". This is an almost whole rabbit with veges and a "wild sauce". Everyone who came with me was very satisfied with their meals.

Hungary has many good vine regions. The most known one is Tokaj but there are others arround the Matra hills, on the northern side of Lake Balaton, as well as near the Danube in the southern part of the country. Don't leave Hungary without tasting some of the vines!Magyar Borok Háza

Kehli Vendeglo is a traditional Hungarian restaurant, founded in 1899. Celebrity diners have included Helmut Kohl, Charles Bronson and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was also the favourite restaurant of the Hungarian writer, Gyula Krudy, who eulogized over the wonderful meals he ate there.You can eat inside the historic building, or al fresco, in the courtyard, to the accompaniment of GOOD gypsy musicians.More than a hundred years of serving top quality Hungarian food have given this award-winning restaurant a well-deserved reputation for fine dining, kept up by the current head chef, Gaal Bela. The service is great too. My favourite dishes were halaszle (fisherman's soup) and borju paprikas (veal stewed wih paprika and mini dumplings). Other traditional dishes include pork stuffed with chicken liver rolled in bacon and roast goose liver with garlic. All to be washed down with tokaji!

A relaxed, but somehow vibrant coffeehouse with 20's decoration in the heart of Budapest, in the centre of the 2nd world war ghetto. Waiters are kind, and they give huge portions. The menu is not long, but everything is tasty. They also have a small theatre with comedies, cabaret, concerts.

It is a bit hard to find and you need a car or taxi. Turn of the century building in an oasis of old world Obuda.Typical Hungarian cousine, great presentation, reasonable prices.At night, traditional, live Hungarian music. I fyou like soup, you must try the selection of soups served in the traditional metal pots, that is still used for soup preparation. Top on your list must be the Hungarian Goulash, yes it is a soup in Hungary.

Good food and drink at reasonable prices, but the best bit was the very friendly staff.Go here for sure and try the honey palinca.Due to its central location it could get very touristy in summer, I guess, but when I was there there were plenty of Hungarians around, which is always a good sign. Try it all.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD!

Traditional Hungarian cuisine includes soups (fish, bean, sauerkraut), sausages, smoked meat and pickles. If we managed to translate the menu or get a waiter to impersonate the live version of the food, the choice was; goulash, meatballs (choices of chicken, goose, pork, beef, veal etc..), dumplings, noodles, lots of paprika dishes (we always saw paprika being sold in local supermarkets), and vegetables. I am a fussy eater and I didn't find the food a problem - in the towns food from different countries (i.e. Italian, French etc..) could be had, so plenty of variety. The best bit of dinner (traditional dessert) comprised of cakes, strudels, fruit soups and pastas (with curd cheese and sour cream). We did try some traditional alcoholic drinks produced in Hungary, such as red and white wine, beer, apricot brandy and various fruit schnapps. Try some Hungarian recipes from this website

1. Nancsi Neni - in Huvosvolgy: very 'home-made'-like restaurant! 2. Janos Restaurant - on Hegyalja street: ugly building, but the food is delicious! (By bus number 8 from Ferenciek square)3 Govinda: Actually it is a restaurant for Krishna followers (so it is vegetarian) but anyone can eat there. Basically I am a meat-eating person, but Govinda's vegetable-stews are delicious. It really worth a try, and the portions are huge! Small menu (equals with the portion of a normal menu at other place) 1100 HUF. Address: Vigyazo Ferenc street 4. (A small street starting from Nador street in the 5th district.) Closed on Sundays!
