we were starving ,crossing a little city a few kilometers east from budapest when we saw something looking like a restaurant. it was written 'Eterem' which stands for restaurant i guess. In fact it was filled with old people and we were invited to enter the kitchen to choose what to eat by the cooker who was looking like a corsair. I don't know what i took as a dessert was salty and what i choose as an entry was with marmelade. What i though was bread was something with chees inside...

This is dad enjoying some bubleves. Hungarian lesson: leves -- soup; bub -- bean; hal -- fish; so bubleves is bean soup, halleves is fish soup. This was at a take away with outdoor tables. Bubleves -- bean soup.

great atmosphere-classy. well so it looks in the website, i cant recall if this is the place i dined.....so im including all which fit the place i dined! whatever i dined at was one of the best meals i have had in my entire life. honest! i had trout or some fish ....no...catfish? with paprika cream sauce, some flour-rice-cake-thing, and a sour cherry strudel type thing. (can you tell i dont know the hungarian names?) the menu was in hungarian, german, and maybe french?
When visiting Eger, remember that there is the homeland of the world known Egri Bikaver (Bull's blood). During the trurkish siege, defenders of Eger put the red wine on their faces and Turkish troops though that it was a bull's blood. That's how the name of the wine was born.

Club Verne on Váci street (Váci utca) [PEST]Piszkos Fred near to Blaha Lujza square [PEST]Aboriginal restaurant close to Csillaghegy HÉV-station [BUDA]Belgian brasserie on Bem rakpart [BUDA] Beer, beer and beer :-). I like Belgian beer, but if you would like to test Hungarian beers, I recommend Borsodi Világos.
'Whaaaaat???' I know. I know. It sounds bizarre, why anyone would suggest McDonald's in Budapest, but there is a reason: It's the spiffiest, trendiest, most elegant McDonald's I've ever seen and is worth a stop just to take a look! (See accompanying photo.) The fare is more or less standard, though you won't find a McDonald's Big Breakfast on the menu, which is about the only thing I consider eating in one of them, but still... when a taste of home beckons, then... (sigh)

The Red Devil - Vörös Ördög ÉtteremIn the summer, most people eat under the trees in a flagstoned courtyard. There is always a strolling Hungarian violinist to entertain you, and the wine is always flowing. The Apfelstrudel is the best I have ever had anywhere -- and I've lived in Austria and Germany, where Strudel is virtually an art form. Theirs is to die for, as they say.

At Dunaujvaros, at the banks of the Donau (Danube) near the ferry, is a restaurant that serves great dishes in warm atmosphere (1995 and 1997!). Most of the time a combo plays classics in te background. Hungarian fishsoups.

In Budapest, if you want to eat something cheap and fast, go to one of the chinese buffets or turkish, arabic buffets. There are a lot of them. (I wouldnt call chinese buffets authentic at all, but they are good.) There is a very good turkish buffet on Szent Istán körút (between Nyugati square and Margit bridge's Pest end, opposite to the theatre called Vígszínház).
