At Fatál you will be served HUGE portions of food for an excellent price. It is centrally located on a cozy section of Vaci utca. The only thing that could be better here, is the attitude of the waiters. I love the fried and breaded turkey filets served with mounds of potatoes and sweet cherries. I believe it is called Rantott Pulyka, but I could be wrong.

From the most humble little restaurants to the most luxurious, they all have that spacial 'Hungarian' atmosphere and typical Hungarian kitchen. Haven't find one yet I didn't't like:-)In the bigger restaurants there is even live 'Gipsy' music, they will play your favorite music for a little tip. Most of the smallest restaurants are also good, the price varies of course depending on the place and even location: in Budapest they mostly are higher than in the country side. If in Hungary, it's a MUST to try the typical Hungarian specialities, like the famous 'Gulyàs', 'Halàszlé' (Hungarian Fish Soup), 'Ràntott sajt'(fried cheese), 'Hortobàgyi Palacsinta' (Special Hungarian warm entré), 'Ràntott velôrozsàk' (just try it, delicious!), 'Füstölt csülök', 'Birkapörkölt', 'Libamàj' (Goose Liver - another delicacy of Hungary's so many specialities), 'Cigànypecsenye', and don't forget to try as...
There are many fantastic restaurants in Hungary. But beware of tourist traps: For example, my Hungarian friend had never heard of the restaurant 'advertised' at the hotel: the prices at this restaurant were 5-10x what you could pay. These higher prices seem reasonable by American standards. Therefore, you don't realize you're getting ripped off. My advice - go your own way and explore. That being said, meals were outrageously inexpensive, rich and delicious. Not many greens though - potato was often the vegetable portion a meal. Also, the wait staff in Hungary are purposely 'hands off' because, as I was told, Hungarians love to talk so the servers try not to rush your meal. This does not mean they are inattentive, but just be sure to catch your server's eye if you need something. Finally, many restaurants had English and German language menus - be sure to ask.
There were many that were very nice, that I really like. But my weakness is for Hungarian desserts! If you also like Hungarian desserts, I highly recommend the Cafe Gerbaud, which is just near to Vaci utca (the nice, elegant shopping strip). The Gerbaud is a gathering place for many shoppers, and is a very nice atmosphere. Enjoy!Often outside of the cafe in the square where it's located, you can hear traditional musicians playing for entertainment. It's excellent! If you visit the Castle of Buda, do not miss the Wine Museum! It is right opposite the Matthias Church. It boasts about 2000 sorts of Hungarian wines, some 200 of which can be tasted right at the place. Just be careful, because if you go out to the sunshine from the cool cellar... well, you may find out that the earth is REALLY turning! (Oh, yes, you can buy the wines, too.)
In Pest(east bank), you may go to Vaci. Stop at the metro station Vorosmarty ter OR Felszabadulas ter, and there are many restaurants, exchange center. In Nyugati Pu (west station) there is Marx ter where you may find a lot of snacks for sale.
